whistles in movies

This is cheating … But The Boys (and a Girl) from County Clare being discussed in another thread features several whistle cues, including:

0:12:35 The Trip We Took Over The Mountain [Bb whistle]
0:36:18 Gander in the Pratie Hole [whistle]
1:09:00 Sally Gardens / Skylark [band & whistles]
1:24:00 Improv / Sally Gardens [whistle]

I seem to remember a film poster of Robert Mitchum playing a whistle, possibly a film called “The Overlanders” and I think set in Australia.

I recently watched a lovely movie called “Sidewalks of London” and was delighted to see the great Charles Laughton play a whistle. Unfortunately, he “plays” it without ever moving his fingers.

There is also a whistle in the 1962 version of “Mutiny on the Bounty” (the one starring Marlon Brando). One of the sailors plays it in the background a few times, but I don’t think it ever appears on screen.

I suppose it’s silly, but I get excited when I encounter whistles in movies. I wanted to bring this thread back to life in case someone had another title to add.

In the movie Young Guns, there is a scene on main street in which the refered to orchestra consist of a fiddle, tin whistle and something else. They played for several minutes.

There an episode of Star Trek where captain Picard plays the whistle. It’s called something else in the series though (they wanted it to be an alien instrument I guess).

I can’t recall the episode but it’s a popular song on youtube so search for “picard whistle” and you’ll probably find a video of it

Wow, surprised nobody has said Braveheart yet… Or did I miss that?

I loved the wake scene in “Road to Perdition.”

BTW, that’s mighty John Williams from Chicago (ex-Solas) squeezing the box. (Whilst smoking, no less…) He’s joined by a great bunch of Chicago area players including Kathleen Keane, Brendan McKinney, Jackie Moran, and Kieran O’Hare. If I recall, John was credited as “music consultant.” (Thomas Newman did the score.)

Lots of past discussion about the Ressikan flute here:

Gangs of New York. I could hear whistles and bodhrans but did not see them in this movie. Along with squeze boxes and banjos. Also heard a few tunes that are sung at the local session here in Clear lake.

I didn’t know about Captain Picard playing whistle, but I did do uilleann pipes on one episode of Next Generation.
It seemed pretty corny, though I admit I’ve never actually watched the episode, just the scenes on the monitor in the recording studio.
Next Generation was among the few shows to do music the old-fashioned (and extremely expensive) way, using a full orchestra of REAL musicians rather than synthesisers.

I think they also had a set of Gibson fireside pipes. I wish I had the full screen version as it was just a brief glance of the piper on the extreme right hand of the screen when I showed it when I ran a movie theater back in the 70’s.

I saw “Troy” last night on the tube. In the scene where Paris and Hector are sailing back to Troy, there is a brief shot and audio of a whistle player noodling on deck. The whistle looks like a black Bb, possibly PVC, but I only got a glimpse.

Aha, that explains all those plastic soda bottles Schliemann dug up. :stuck_out_tongue:

I watched it last night, too, but missed that scene. Dang.

The Boys from County Clare.
“Despite the Beatles, one man keeps the faith”

I’ve only seen it once, but I seem to remember one of the guys playing a whistle in Hitchcock’s “Lifeboat”.

Jason

The Chieftains received an oscar for these songs on the soundtrack of Barry Lyndon !!!

  1. Seán Ó Riada: Women of Ireland
    The Chieftains 4:08
  2. Piper’s Maggot jig
presumably The Chieftains, though not specifically credited 1.39
  3. The Sea-Maiden
    The Chieftains 2.02
  4. Seén Ó Riada:Tin Whistles
    Paddy Moloney and Seán Potts

I just watched ‘You Kill Me’ with Ben Kingsley and Téa Leoni. Ben Kingsley is working at a wake and there’s an Irish band playing. I don’t remember the tune and I’m not sure what brand whistle it was, but it was brass with a green top.

That narrows the field a bit.

And the PVC plumbing in the Trojan bathrooms. The Greeks had to make do with PVC porta-potties.

a burke viper low d was played in gangs of new york.

just so you know.

I believe the movie “Glory” has a small ensemble with a whistle player in it.
