My Beatle sources say Jim Walker from Titanic will be playing whistle with Sir Paul
McCartney on his new song Vanilla Sky tonight
at the Academy Awards.
I bet we get a lot more interest in the whistle after this!

I think it was a brass Feadog or Walton’s, and I don’t know the type of low whistle that was used.
That was some great whistling, wasn’t it? I’m so tickled that whistling is getting more and more high-profile attention!
It looked like he started with a Low whistle, though between broadcast sound and my hearing I wouldn’t swear the key was D. He then switched to a high whstle and all I can say was the barrel was metal. Unfortunately, the director seemed to prefer McCartney’s right profile, which gave us lots of shots of the other guitar, but no more than a few shadowy glimpses of the whistle player to his right rear. The guy was good, though.
I sawn the head piece of the higher whistle and it appeared to be a shade of green. I’m not sure which whistle it was though.

I missed watching it. ah, well.
When I saw the green fipple, I thought it was a Walton’s - it kind of sounded like a Walton’s too. What color of fipple does the little black Walton’s have? On my TV, the fipple looked kind of a flourescent green. I recorded that part of the broadcast and will see if I can get a good capture to post on this board.

I have no inside info, but I would say there is a high probability that this was the guy playing whistle on the Titanic soundtrack.
He is a top drawer LA studio musician who has performed on tons of movie soundtracks, including Titanic. His website ( http://www.jimwalkerflute.com/jimwalker/ ) doesn’t say what instrument he was playing for Titanic (he is principally a flute player), but elsewhere on his web site there is a reference to a piece he performs in which a “penny whistle was added to the original instrumentation”. So, we know he plays the whistle, and that he was on hand when the soundtrack was recorded. I rest my circumstantial case.

There are 3 whistles that I know of that have a green fipple:
- Waltons - medium green, glossy
- Feadog - medium green (almost olive), matte
- Clare - bright green (almost neon), glossy
The Generation Folk Whistle also has a brass body and a green fipple - looks a lot like a Clare.
Yea, that thing was bright green and brass. it must have been a clare?
Man, I thought I was going to pass out on the couch after about the third hour. If I hadn’t heard there’d be a whistler on “Vanilla Sky” I might have bailed. Then in a cruel irony, they show paul and the guitar player only. It was like a SNL skit or something. I half expected the whistler to like lean over in front of Paul to get his head in picture.
It was nice to see that poor Jennifer Lopez finaly could afford a whole dress. Did anyone SEE Gweneth Paltro before she left the house? and if they did why did they let her out in public? That was the most unflatering dress I can remember.
Okay I have to Butch up a little here, How about Indiana being in the final four, Eh?

I emailed this fellow today to ask him about the whistles he played last night. I also asked if he could shed any light on the Titanic mystery. I’ll post any reply here.

Thanks forthe Jim Walker web address. I WROTE TO HIM FOR ALL OF US! Who knows if he will answer or write in here. But at least he will
learn about Chiff and Fipple and that there
are Whistlers out there and we are alert
and interested in other whistle/flute players.

Well, here’s some info :
A chiff & fipple subscriber, Michael O’Donavan played in the orchestra on the Academy Award show. He says the low was a Howard Low D. I’m getting clarification on the high whistle as we speak.

Credits on the Titanic soundtrack say the whistle player is Tony Hinnigan. Same guy who played on the Braveheart soundtrack. No info on type of whistle.

Wow. Could it be that easy? I’ve never looked on the liner notes because I don’t have the CD. Never heard it either. Never saw the movie. I did, of course, hear “My Heart Will Go On” sixty zillion times.
Tots, are you talking about the original soundtrack album or the second album called “Back to the Titainc”. I don’t have either album so I can’t check for sure, but I think at least some of “Back to the Titanic” was recorded by the London Symphony, so the musicians may not have been those heard in the actual movie.
Original sountrack. But a relative of mine has the Back to Titanic thingee, I checked that and the same whistle player. Apparently he works a lot with Horner.
I just did a search and the guy plays cello and flute too. He did the cello solos on the Titanic sountrack.
Ian Underwood plays on the soundtrack too, so that may explain the Keith Underwood confusion. But I think Ian does the synth work on the tracks.
