Whistle with Symphonic Orchestra

Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum … Anyone know of arrangements for whistle and orchestra - or orchestra pieces with whistle? It would be for a St. Patrick’s Day Symphony Pops concert.

Howard Shore’s movie score for the Lord of Rings Trilogy has whistle parts playing alongside the orchestra. One obvious piece being “In Dreams” aka “Concerning Hobbits”. You can find a sample of it on youtube with James Galway and others playing the whistle part.

You’d probably never find the score, but this is what hooked me on pennywhistle 20 or so years ago. I gave my flute away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD82Mhaf5nY
It’s not exactly St Patrick’s day stuff, but he did a lot of that, too.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tIl0DD0Ta0

Edited to say here’s the one with whistle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUoVdHjNMpY&feature=related
I think the other was on a piccolo but I believe the tune was called “Pennywhistle Jig”

It’s likely that you’ll find whistle included in the orchestra scores of Shaun Davey, who wrote The Brendan Voyage, The Pilgrim, Granuaile, and The Relief of Derry Symphony.
He usually focused on irish folk instrumentation while using symphony or chamber symphony for his recordings.

John Corigliano, Pied Piper Fantasy:

The 7th Movement, The Children’s March, calls for high D whistle, played quite high.

VII. The Children’s March – The Piper has had enough. He puts his flute aside and pulls a tiny tin whistle out of his pocket and plays The Children’s March. In contrast to the chorale, the march is bright, cheerful and lively. It grows in volume and spirit despite occasional interruptions from the burghers’ brass group. After the march’s first peak. The Piper begins to trill. Suddenly a group of young flutists positioned in the audience answers his call. The Piper calls again, and another group responds and yet another.

Wouldn’t something like that be a thrill at a St Patrick’s Day concert!
