Whistle tutors in the Boston area

Hi all,

I’m new to the whistle and I’ve learned some basics from various online instruction, but I think it’s time to see a real life professional. Can anyone recommend an instructor in the greater Boston area? I’d like to take some lessons over the summer.

Also, does anyone recommend getting a multimedia instruction book? My ultimate goal is to become good enough to play in a sessioin. I should also mention that I’m getting into music relatively late in life (33!) but I’m committed to doing this, and I’m a pretty good learner. I’d appreciate any advice y’all can give.

You came to the right place.
I highly, highly recommend whistle lessons with Shannon Heaton of Siucra. You can get in touch with her via her web page here: http://www.eatsrecords.com/

Shannon is one of the best, most utterly musical whistle/flute players I’ve ever heard, an incredibly nice person and a wonderful teacher. Get in touch with her… and tell her Chris Laughlin says hi

If she’s not available for lessons she’ll be able to get you in touch with someone great who is available.

By the way, start going to the Sunday night sessions at O’Leary’s pub at 1010 Beacon St. in Brookline (St. Mary’s St. on the Greenline) and LISTEN. Don’t play… listen, listen, listen… the music is amazing.

Best,
Chris

Will do! Thanks for the info. I knew there had to be few whistlers in this area.

BTW, have you ever been to the “slow session” at the Green Briar? I wouldn’t even attempt it at this point, but I was wondering what it was like.

Yup. Go. Listen. It’s a great place to learn. You’ll meet lots of great people, start learning the tunes, and just plain have a great time. You’ll enjoy it a lot!
Best,
Chris
