Hello all!
I recently heard the beautiful song the mystery inch by david kosky.
the main lick is just beautiful and I was wondering if anyone had managed to play it on the whistle? and if so could they share with me any tabs or help!
I have a low and high D, C, and b flat whistle - but I understand it may be impossible but thank you anyway!!
thanks guys!!! really appreciate any and all help!
To play it as written, in three sharps, if you play it on a D whistle you have to half-hole all those G# notes. You can get pretty good at it, like anything else it just takes practice.
Ordinarily I play tunes in three sharps on my Low E whistle, but this tune presents the problem that it has low D notes (the lowest note on an E whistle is E). Setting #6 there on The Session is transposed for E whistle.
The other possibilities are playing in on an “A” whistle using the 6th as the tonic, or a “B” whistle using the 5th as the tonic.
EDIT: I just posted a setting transposed for “B” whistle or “B” uilleann chanter, I think it works really well. The Mystery Inch (jig) on The Session
I do believe that Jerry Freeman makes “B” whistles, they’re a Generation Bb whistle shortened etc to play in B. (My B whistle is likewise a Generation Bb, that I modified myself.)
Those low Ds provide a nice tonal juxtaposition and add so much character in this tune. It’s worth working on the G-sharps just for that.
For me, if I ever do play it, it’ll be in a whistle-friendly key with a whistle to transpose it if necessary.
