I lost my Syn whistle at a workshop not long ago and now realize sadly that it is never coming back. It is time for me to replace it and while it was a very wonderful whistle especially for a moderate beginner like myself there were a few things that I would like to change with my next whistle. I would generally like a whistle that is a bit easier to play then the syn (even and in tune, responsive, lower air requirements, etc.) and is considerably less loud and piercing than the Syn (especially in the 2nd octave) I wont be playing in a loud session or on stage anytime soon and wind resistance is not a factor. As far as a budget goes I wouldn’t mind spending a bit more than I spent on the Syn ($85) as long as it was what I was looking for.
Recommendations appreciated,
Phillip.
Have you tried a Freeman Bluebird?
I don’t know how it compares to the Syn, but its a wonderful whistle IMO.
Get a Kildare Susato!!
Or a Mellow dog.. now that i have both i am really torn between them as to which one’s best.
I’ve got a used alloy Silkstone that’s a sweet little whistle (in as new condition). Needs very little breath to play, is somewhat quiet and has a very sweet upper octave. And I’ll let it go very reasonably.
Contact me by PM if you’re interested.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I decided to purchase a Bluebird from Jerry Freeman. It has a very big following and above all seems to fit my criteria. Great Price too. ![]()
Now I just need to keep an eye out for a used Milligan. ![]()
I’d be interested in how the Bluebird compares to you Syn.
If you ever feel like posting you impressions I for one would be grateful.
