Whistle making question

Well, it started with some tweaking and now I’m sliding down that slippery slope of whistlemaking…

Earlier this evening I started making some tools to be able to make high D whistles of the same basic design as the Chieftain low D’s. I got the idea when I found a couple of lengths of 12mm Alu pipes and considering that I have access to a lathe and mill I figured; -Why not… The first attempt wasn’t entirely successful as I found out that the window doesn’t seem to scale in a linear fashion. I made the fipple block from a piece of Aluminum without any problems and I’ve made a jig which allows me to use a hydraulic jack to crimp it in place. Before I go ahead and make a second attempt I need to figure out the correct size of the window.

-Does anyone have any suggestions? If I were to scale down the Chieftain’s window linearly it would go from 14 by 7 mm to 6.4 by 3.2 mm. That seems a bit on the smallish side when I compare it to my other high D whistles…

I believe that the window does not scale in a linear fashion with frequency.
Try a length of 4mm

Yeah, air never scales linearly. Think Reynolds Number when you scale things.

And note the key phrase “must be determined experimentally.” Which gets us competely off the hook for trying to calculate too much. It’s handy the holes come out as close as they do to the math predictions.
