Whistle Making - Mouthpieces?

Hello whistlers

Are there any books, journals you can recommend.

I need to understand the relationship between the size, shape and position of the wind window, and labia/blade on the position on the whistle.

What governs the placement, width, height of the wind window for responsiveness, balance between registers etc.

I am achieving different tonal results with the test pieces I am producing, but doing this without any firm guidance or understanding.

Don’t know if there is anything definitive out there.

I looked hard yet myself but there might be more ‘stuff’ out there about organ pipes. Problem would be that a whistle requires a two octave working range which implies compromise

I must confess that the art of “Ducted Flue” design is closely guarded by commercial Recorder makers.

You can find plans in a few “how-to” books, Like Irving Sloane’s “Making Musical Instruments” and Trevor Robinson’s “The Amateur Wind Instrument Maker”, but they give little amateur help. You can find some info here…

I will compile a better list and post later. The angle of the labium ramp determins the speed of register “break” and controls pitch stability. The labium ramp angle varies from a shallow Bressan Recorder and Tabor Pipe angle of 18 degrees for fast register changes and pitch bending to a steep 34 degrees, on some plastic Recorders, for Reedy tone and pitch stability. The variations to the voicing are Legion and each Designer can make modifications to suit any player.

Anything “Specific” about Ducted Flue Voicing Design that eludes your research? I keep a great deal of my humble 17 yrs of research in my head. If you don’t want to have this interesting subject posted here, (with help from other expert members) you can e-mail.
