I saw the recommendation for the Clarke whistle instruction book by Bill Ochs in the last newsletter but I’m having trouble finding it (preferrably pocket-sized) at a store that sells a variety of other whistles. I’m thinking of getting a tabor, meg or doolin, but none of them seem to share a store with the pocket Clarke book. Any store ideas or good whistle book recommendations? I’ve searched Hobgoblin, Andy’s Front Hall, The Whistle Shop and Shanna Quay. And I can read sheet music and already play basic tunes, but I need to learn all that nifty sliding and cutting what-have-you. Think along the lines of Tin Whistle for Dummies… I’m a tad sleep-deprived. Okay… go nuts. ![]()
There are several tutorial/CD sets listed in the Tutorals section of the Annex.
I know for sure that The Whistle Shop sells the full size version of Och’s book and they have plenty of whistles. Great service ![]()
There’s no good reason why Shanna Quay doesn’t stock Bill Och’s book (I cant speak for the other stores, obviously). I’ll get onto it ASAP.
My personal favourite - very comprehensive - book is Geraldine Cotter’s Traditional Irish Tin Whistle Tutor.

I think it’s a good idea to get several books on whistle playing if you can afford it. Each author takes a different approach, and you will learn different things from each. Another excellent book that nobody has mentioned yet is LE McCullough’s classic guide.
Thanks… I’ll check those out, and I did find that The Whistle Shop has expanded their selection but I can’t order yet anyway. I was trying to find the items I want all together just to save shipping. I could just place my orders and to heck with the man, but then he’d want to know what I need more whistles for when I already have 3. Some people. ![]()
