My new whistle is on its way and I may learn myself. Books?

Any good books or videos to learn finger position etc for the whistle. I am a bagpiper and hope it isn’t too crazy to learn this thing, but can’t wait.

Thanks for any help.

Lots of recommendations on the forum. Since you’re already a piper you might try Grey Larsen’s book if you like minute details.

There are also several free online tutorials.

You could consider a DVD tutor: perhaps it’s easier to learn ornamentation seeing a whistle player who make them.
I think both L. E. McCullough and Vinnie Kilduff are good.

About books you can see here

I hope this helps.

I see now Jason recommandations (I take a few minutes to write a post in a decent english… ): a lot of good stuff in their links.

I would recommend lessons, because that’s how you get the best training. Even just a few lessons to learn the basics of ornamentation and whatnot would help a lot.

Yeah, I say that all the time when people ask me about bagpipes and how to learn. I guess I sound as foolish thinking I can just grab a book and play away. I suppose I need to find an instructor here in the Pittsburgh area.

Thanks for all the help and the links. I am so looking forward to learning this. Sure love the lovely tone of a low D. Hope to make some pleasant tone at some point.

Hi Curtis,
I know lessons are probally the best way to learn something new but in my case this just isn’t possible. I live in a very rural area in the deep south and it is just Me, my whistle and my books. I’m using the Clarke Tin Whistle Handbook by Bill Ochs and like it very much. I also have The Tin Whistle Toolbox by Larsen but am not quite ready for it yet. As already mentioned there is alot of stuff on the internet. I really like Nigel Gatherer’s Scottish Whistle pages. I found them most helpful before I even bought my first book. Hope this helps some.

For websites, I would recommend http://whistletutor.com/.
