I’ll Just add the reminder that once upon a time the the prefix WTT for Whistle Tech Topic was used (mostly by Serpent) for posts related to whistle building.
Certainly a prefix makes it easier to spot whistle making posts, which is a good thing, but whatever prefix we choose to use going forward kind of buries a lot of the older posts without the prefix, which isn’t so convenient.
But if we stick to a prefix, over time we’ll be sure to cover most of the questions that come up. It doesn’t matter to me what convention we use for the prefix.
Search on WTT brings up topics re “Want To Trade”. That seems to be the current usage of WTT.
That’s why I suggested WM, short for “Whistle Making”, “Whistle Maker”, “Whistle Magic”, etc., DIY or not.
Thanks for all the comments on my question about a forum for builders. I am glad to see that many of you do not mind questions about how to build whistles, tune them , etc. at this location. I just did not know if this would be the best place or I guess the appropriate place for that, but if so, I appreciate it very much. I am glad to see all the interest. I am sure some of us may have similar questions, but have wondered where we could get the best information. If this is it I will be glad to start submitting a few questions. No reason to create a new forum if we do not need one.
You know, I don’t think there is a question about whistle making that hasn’t already been asked and answered (multiple times) on this forum. It’s all here, archived, welcoming anyone to search it out… Everything anyone needs to know in order to make a great whistle… except for three things: experience and skill, and the skill that only comes with experience. I whole-heartedly encourage anyone who isn’t overly clumsy or accident prone to give whistle making a try. But remember, a person’s ability to make a great whistle is going to be determined largely by his/her ability to play a great whistle. Otherwise, it’s very difficult for them to know what they are doing, what they have done, and what they should do differently. Other limitations will include time, workspace and conditions, tools available (and your ability to work with them), materials available (and your ability to work with them), and financial means. Developing a good solid set of whistle making skills costs money… a lot of money in some cases.
As mentioned earlier, there have been requests for a maker’s forum in the past. At one point I would have supported the idea myself… but aside from whatever other reasons there are for not having one, I could also see it as having the potential for a lot of misunderstanding between users and inevitably, a fair amount of disagreement as well. (I know that seems hard to believe but… ) I don’t mean anything derogatory by this, it’s just that people know what they know, and they don’t all always agree, and they don’t always know how to express what they know in ways that everyone else understands. There are a lot of whistle makers who do post on this forum, although the “amatures” post a lot more frequently than the “professionals” do (with a few exceptions). Any time someone has a question, there are always plenty of people willing to give them the benefit of their experiences, and as a registered user, you always have the option of sending another member a PM with a question as well.
Your mods are mulling this discussion. Mull, mull …
Keep in mind that the Chiffboard search facility ignores terms of less than 3 letters. So if you’re going to choose a tag prefix, it should be at least 3 characters long.
