I’ve just come across Gavin Whelan’s new CD “Catch the Air,” which has quickly become one of my favourite CDs. Why? Well apart from the lovely playing and backing, 90% of the tracks are on whistle (the pipes only getting a brief look in) and ALL the tracks are slow airs, somewhat rare among whistle albums. To be honest I’m not that fond of reels, jigs etc nor in listening to the pipes and most whistle CDs will have only one or two slow tunes at most. I love airs on the whistle. So this CD is a gem. My question would be, does anyone know of any other CDs that favour slow airs on the whistle or low whistle?

I know his music is pipes based but 40% is low whistle
and a lot are slower tunes.

Thanks guys! Maybe I should have said I was looking for high whistle CDs since I think I know most of the low whistles players out there . . . but you never know, someone may surprise me. Yes, I’m already aware of Fred Morrison in fact I’m trying to accurately transpose one of his tunes right now, Leaving Uist. If either of you have done your own written transcription of any of his tunes, I would be interested in seeing them. Generally I start with whatever is on Session.org and that try to make it more accurate in terms of ornaments etc. He’s done a book I know but it doesn’t include ornaments sadly. Thanks for the videos too. I’ll have a look at those right now.

Leaving Uist set
Leaving Lochmaddy set
Passing Places
Are you aware of any others?
