hey, i had a strong urge for an instrument, few weeks ago, so 2 days ago i went into a store, saw a flute and decided to get it… always liked the sounds they gave plus since the “titanic” soundtrack was released i always wondered what it would feel like sitting on the beach at sunset just playing out to the ocean…
anyways, i have no knowledge about this anyat all… plz help.. btw i want to teach myself with the help of this forum, that way it stays true to being a passion pursued…
well i guess, i guess in jumped the beginning, since i got a bescher bu-1 flute… i managed to get a sond ot of it so far… but thats before i cover any holes.. i printed a finger chart from the net and spent an hor since morning trying to play the c note… T123 - 1234 something like that bt i couldnt get it to sound… felt very dizzy afterwards… Is there some blowing techniqe that im missing… or is it the flute (i know that a bad workman blames the tools of his craft but still) ?
What sort of flute did you buy? Info would help us help you.
Are there teachers avialiable? A lesson or two at the beginning
can be a big help.
Flute is hard, mon. Takes patience. Everybody has your experience
at the beginning. It will takes months of work to get control
of the thing, but it’s worth it.
Thats a Bohem flute… It will play but its not what you will call a high end flute that is for darn sure. I have one I got new at a swap meet. Paid about 25 bucks for it… My IMHO almost too much.
Has a rough time at the lowest end. Why they try and sell these things to beginers is… well, its a shame.
I’d take it back for a refund and buy a whistle or a simple system flute like Doug Tipples.
Much cheaper and you’ll be starting on something that will play.
A simple system flute has six open holes you cover
with your fingers. That’s the sort we play, most of us.
You’ve got a concert flute, apparently not a good one.
The holes are covered by keys–not so good for playing
the theme from Titanic so that it sounds Irish.
Doug Tipple makes inexpensive PVC simple system
flutes. You can find his website online.
You have to be careful with this terminology as the Irish player of trad music generally refers to the wooden simple system instrument when they say “concert flute”.
A friend of mine has an old nickel plated Buescher Boehm flute and it plays quite nicely but that is not to say they all do.
