Surely our astute group will not be fooled by this impertinent imposter. One can tell immediately and conclusively, evidenced by the jocularity, the political thrust, by the sheer volume of posts, that this poseur is not Dale. Dale is far too busy for this sort of nonsense. I suspect a kidnapping or other sinister plot or foul play…Any ideas?
(best Basil Rathbone voice) An excellent observation, PhilO. And have you not also observed the striking number of OT posts, coincident, I might add, with elendil’s sabbatical? Something is afoot, my dear fellow. Best fetch yer revolver!
Let us parse “elendil”.
If we write it “elen-dil”, we can then assume that “dil” could be a modified version of “dal” or more accurately “dale”. We are then left with the “elen-” part which everyone will agree is a bad pronounciation of “alien”.
Thus, “elendil” is a twisted attempt at “alien dale” which further proves that someone is posing as Dale.
Does anyone know if Dale was nurturing any pods?
That is one of my favourite movies of all time (the other one being, for no reason, The Day The Earth Stood Still). They’re becoming relevant again, since the US Government in its wisdon has decided to revive 1950’s paranoia.
Weren’t there 3 versions of Body Snatchers? Some are better than others. The version i like is in black & white.
Yes, three Body Snatchers movies. The first one (BW) is the best, very good and (for an American movie) very noir. The second one with Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, a very young Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy (!) is also good. The third one is pure crap and to be avoided.
Yes, the first one, the one with the dark ending. Very good. For the people who haven’t seen it, it’s about how you’re never sure if anyone is one of “us” or one of “them”. Anybody on the street could be working for Osama, so you have to be vigilant, etc. I agree the most recent version is krap.
The other movie i mentioned “The Day The Earth Stood Still” is about the hope of transcending paranoia into sanity, even if we have to be forced into it.
Watch these and the original Star Trek series, and you will be enlightened. Maybe.
At my house, we often use that special scream and point effect, which provided the “shocker” ending to the Donald Sutherland version of Body Snatchers.
The best part of that flick was the messed up pod creature–a dog with a man’s head, barking.
Agreed Bloomfield , Glauber, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy was one of the scariest movies ever made - the thought that your mothers, brothers, postman could be aliens (actually I’ve often had that thought) is more frightening than a truckload of Freddys or Jasons. Actually, that special effects stuff in the Sutherland remake was a bit of a distraction for me and weakened the horror ( I take my horror straight). That first movie was raw…
The brilliant thing about the book and the first movie (and the Sutherland movie, to be fair), was the immediacy of the fear and paranoia. Think about it: you literally can’t go to sleep or they’ll get you. That is sheer genius, how Finney captured the fear of communism in America in the fifties. It can happen to anyone: your colleague, your sister, your spouse, and if you don’t stay awake, on your guard, it will happen to you, too. (Just like gay marriage. )
