I like pipes all styles and pitches, but narrowbore B is my favorite.
Without a doubt C#
According to some, the “pitch” into the lake.

Em… no… seriously… I like the flat pitches best. I lurve my B set by Geoff Wooff, that tone can’t be beaten. This is the set I play at home.
I have to admit that I play a couple of D chanters. A Martin Preshaw which has amazing tone and a Rogge that has amazing tuning… now all I need is one with both elements!
PD.
The reason I asked what’s your favourite pitch is mine was Concert"D"
and my favourite pipers were Davy Spillane,Sean Potts,Willy Clancy,
but last year while in a music I found a disc in the Irish music section
by Liam O’ Flynn so I asked to hear some of the of the tracks.
The disc is called The Fine Art of Piping,
one of these tracks was a reel called Eddie Moloney’s/Connie Conell’s
played on Seamus Ennis’s old Coyne C# set, hearing this tune being
so gracefully played made me understand what piping is all about
it,s class in a glass I rate it as the best bit of piping I’ve heard the set
is just singing I take my hat of to the chap, Brilliant. ![]()

I like c# as it still has the playability of a flat set , with the energy of the concert pitch sets . For me though , my ear does not hear as well in the key of c natural , I guess I am like color blind in that key . So my opinion is tainted by that . I like my concert set thin wall , by chas. roberts very much , but since the bore is not quite as wide as a rousome , it has its limitations . I like the concert chanters as one can do more " tricks " on them as compared to the slow and lumbering , dinasauar like , flat chanters .
But I like the flat sets cause they are easier to reed up , and play , and keep in tune . I guess I like c # as it seems to me to be the key that is the best of both worlds . ![]()

I perfer the flat pitch.C#/C/B/Bb
I play my Andreas Rogge C full set/B chanter at home for practing tunes, playing along with a singer, playing with the fiddle/accordeon, solo playing and playing with another C or B player which I do the occasionally.
I do have a Andreas Rogge D chanter which I use for sessions and for pipe workshops.
Pipers I like who play(ed) flat sets is Seamus Ennis, Tommy Reck, Willie Clancy Liam O’ Flynn, Robbie Hannan, Jimmy O’Brien Moran and Geoff Wooff.
The best Pipemakers Making flat sets now would be Andreas Rogge, Geoff Wooff and Alain G. Froment.

…
Yeah, like Robbie Hannan’s “slow and lumbering” B set… ![]()
Concert pitch is cool, but flat sets rule!
Back to playing my Peter Hunter B set (w/regs by Brad Angus)

My favorite is B.
I don’t have a chanter in B, but I’m making one. I can’t wait till it’s done!

Oh Tok,
Dinosaur like flat chanters, life is’nt that bad is it! ![]()
verbal suicide,
don’t you want to live to a ripe old age
playing your Concert “D” set till the angels come for ya.

Ok , sorry there folks . Just teasing .

concert pitch!

Tok,
Re-reading this thread, a question comes to mind: What kind of tricks can you do on a concert chanter that you can’t on a flat stick? Enquiring minds want to know. (Despite the semi-snotty subject line, this is a serious question.)
Thanks,
No E
None that I know of… I can actually do more tonally on my B than on my D… hand’s down!
Patrick.
No E , I was thinking of faster playing speed , with reels on a d set . And how the " show stopper " tunes , like the bucks of oranmore have more flash when played in concert pitch , " than on the flat sets . Also , since the regulators are in a higher pitch , that seems to add to the excitement .
Just my opinion . Hopeing to give some insight , and not show my ignorance , to the WHOLE WORLD !! since this it the internet lol

Hi Guys,
Anyone heard, Port na bPucai or Australian Waters, The BlackBird,
or Dark Lock na Gar, played on a B or C set? Concert Rules then C#. ![]()
I’ve heard, definitely, 3 of the 4 on B and Bb. Really, it’s just measurable to the players understanding of the particular instruments abilities. Pipes sound great to me whatever.
Alan
My Gallagher C just came back from Seth having been re-reeded and additional keywork. It’s gonna be hard playing anything else for a while…
I too was surprised by tok’s remark about not being able to do as much on a flat set. The narrow bores require far less pressure and, if anything, are more capable than a concert set. That being said, a concert set has the punch required to bring out the sex and violence which first attracted me to IrTrad in the first place. ![]()
