One is almost afraid to ask.
There is a screw type thing on my pilot lights that can adjust the setting of the pilot lights. When I moved into the home, the pilot lights were set extremely low and any breeze across the burners would blow out the pilot lights. Only by chance did I find out that a pilot light could be adjust and how to adjust the setting. I increased the setting and only rarely does a hefty wind blow out the pilot lights now. This is a much rarer event now.
Aha. Safer, too!

The tornado in '93 really opened up our kitchen, but we had to go next door to use our fridge.
I’m fussy about pencils. It has to be the green Faber-Castell type or the solid graphite-all-the-way-through sticks. I hate it when a cheap pencil claims to be 6B and then makes a faint grey smear. I also have to remove the built-in little erasers on the back of cheap pencils if they don’t erase but only smudge.
Having said that, I hardly ever draw with pencils, preferring pen & nib and real ink.
Also fussy about ballpoint and fineliner pens for writing: must be black, never blue.
I only use mechanical erasers, the erasers on pencils are reserved for chewing. Unfortunately pencil manufacturers used lead based paints when I was younger and first started this habit. Unfortunately pencil manufacturers used lead based paints when I was younger and first started this habit.
At least you didn’t add, “And I turned out fine.”
I, of course, am fussy about pencils too. I only require a sharp point and have electric pencils sharpeners at my desks at home and work.
Another thing I am fussy about. Mayonaisse/Miracle Whip. Miracle Whip should be a felony as should any type of Low-Fat or No-Fat Mayo. Has anyone tried the new Hellman’s Olive Oil Mayo? Is the taste richer or different than regular Hellman’s? Does anyone know of a richer tasting Mayo than Hellman’s? Have you made your own?
We like alioli. Dukes Mayo is big around these parts, it’s owned by a Richmond, VA company, C.F. Sauer. Hellman’s of course is a Yankee product, I don’t know if it’s legal south of the James Rivah.
There was a Rhode Island company called Seidner’s that made a mayo popular in New England. When I moved South, I used to get a quart of Seidner’s when I was back home. Sadly, I think they went out of business.
Next time I run out of Hellman’s I’m going to try making mayo or alioli. I had some homemade alioli with habaneros once, and it was divine. I don’t generally use mayo for anything besides potato or tuna fish salad, but I dipped veggies or crackers into that stuff.
I find I’m a lot happier if I’m not overly fussy about anything.
OK, beer. It can’t be corn and rice American mainstream swill. I’d literally rather just drink water. But even there, as long it’s all malt, water, yeast and hops, I’ll probably like it OK. I’ll even bend the four ingredient rule for Belgian beers. In fact, I applaud it.
Oh, good, fussiness has a foot in the door. There is much hope. Do you really like when beer is served in a frozen glass? Does the shape of the glass matter to you? Temperature? Do you need a huggie? Do you have a favorite huggie? Bottle or can? Tall neck v. short neck? Do you have a favorite coaster? Huh? Huh? Huh? Do you buy your porch furniture by whether it has a satisfactory drink holder? Would you drink out of one of the red or blue Solo plastic cups? (I have a little bit of throw up in my mouth after that last question) Do you ever serve or order beers in a bucket of ice? Does the bucket have to be galvanized steel or can you deal with a plastic container? Would you travel an extra 10 miles to buy your favorite beer? What if they were out of your beer, would you go further? Would you pass if I invited you and a bunch of your friends out for beers if I offerred to pay? Huh? Huh? Huh?
Dixie Cups! Dixie Cups! This is the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the end of the Great Lost Cause, save your Dixie Cups the South will rise again!
Do you really like when beer is served in a frozen glass? Not especially, but I won’t turn it down.
Does the shape of the glass matter to you? Not really.
Temperature? Cool is nice, but I’ve enjoyed ice cold ones, and downright warm beer.
Do you need a huggie? Nope
Do you have a favorite huggie? Don’t have any
Bottle or can? Can USUALLY (but not always) connotes the nebbish commercial sturr which I don’t particularly care for.
Tall neck v. short neck? Don’t care
Do you have a favorite coaster? No
Do you buy your porch furniture by whether it has a satisfactory drink holder? Nope. Would you drink out of one of the red or blue Solo plastic cups? – I have good memories of lots of great family picnics where those cups are used, so they hold no horrors for me.
Do you ever serve or order beers in a bucket of ice? Just once on a cruise where it was the special of the day, in a souvenir bucket.
Does the bucket have to be galvanized steel or can you deal with a plastic container? That one was plastic.
Would you travel an extra 10 miles to buy your favorite beer? No, I’d wait until I had to go that way for other purposes.
What if they were out of your beer, would you go further? No-- I’d find something else to try. I’ve discovered some terrific beers that way.
Would you pass if I invited you and a bunch of your friends out for beers if I offerred to pay? Huh? Huh? Huh?-- I’d be pleased and honored to have lunch and some beers with you, Mute. Good questions.
Oh yeah, socks… they have to be cotton ![]()
Fussy about beer - now that would be kinda crazy. Mine’s a pint.

Well… I’d rather have something with a decent colour than that fizzy, gassy yellow stuff some people call beer, although I’ll not turn down a bottle of Cobra if there’s spicy food on the go. I’ve learned from painful experience that the diuretic properties of Guinness and Old Peculier lead to that unpleasant state known as “the beer seal”. Lighter ales fortunately do not have the same effect. If I’m drinking at the Folk Club, ales of 5.0 % and above lead to fumble-fingered playing. If I’m drinking at the Ceilidh, avoid those ales described as “Rich in Tannin” as they taste as though they are brewed from oak-leaves.
But, no, being fussy about beer would be ridiculous.
Doppelbock, it’s the only beer that gives ya the nutrition ya need when your jaw is wired shut three days before the state road race.

Agreed, but that’s lager, isn’t it? Beer being real ale, to be drunk pintwise, except at festivals when one has to go for thirds in order to try at least a tiny percentage of the riches on offer.
But, no, being fussy about beer would be ridiculous.
Sure, if you’re in a perilous state of dehydration. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t be induced to drink Fat Tire so long as there was a nominally clean-looking toilet bowl to save me. But hey, call me ridiculous. ![]()
Oh yeah, socks… they have to be cotton
I’m not even going to go into ways to be fussy about socks in general and specifically about cotton but I will tell one story about socks. Back in the 80’s when those hideous tube socks with the bold double stripes where in fashion, I was in a wedding party and white tuxedos were selected. I had actually seen previous wedding parties where mismatched striping on the tube socks could be seen through the pant material of ushers, so I bought all the men in the wedding party classic white dress socks.
