what kind of whistle do you recommend?

i’m currently thinking about getting a whistle, but i don’t know what kind should i get, like an A an Bb, an C. or Low A. D.. etc
please give me your thoughts for reference thank you !~

I would recommend starting with just a plain old high D. I would recommend against buying a low whistle yet, but it’s a good idea to get several high D whistles to see what kind of sound and playing characteristics you like in a whistle.

I would buy some combination of:

Clarke original D
Oak D
Generation D
Feadog D
Waltons Brass

Then later I would add one or more of:

Whitecap fipple from Mack Hoover on Generation or Feadog tube (very pure, sweet, elegant whistle)

Syn D (pure tone, moderately loud)

Susato D (loud whistle, takes much control but can be played with real aggression, even angst :smiling_imp: )

Serpent polymer D (moderately loud whistle with a breathier tone that recalls that of the Clarke, takes aggressive play)

Yep.

The reason for buying a D is that most Irish music is played in keys that are easily playable on a D whistle, and therefore most tutors are written in those keys. If you hope to play with other musicians, or to play along with records, you’ll need a D…and for newbies, having a few different kinds of whistles is good because that will help you get a feel for the type of whistle you like best.

The reason you don’t want to start with a low D is they are a bit more difficult to play…the holes are larger, and much more widely spaced, and the breath requirements are higher.

Ultimately, you may also want to get a C…most of what can’t be played on a D whistle can be played on a C.

Get at least one of every kind you can find until your credit card maxes out. Then start stealing other people’s whistles. Then start making your own. Scoop up dirt out of the earth and form the whistle with your bare hands if you have to. When you die, donate your bones to whistle makers, so that they can make whistles out of your bones.
That’s about all I’ve learnt since I’ve been here.

WhOA WhOA WhOA WhOA WhOA

(a’la Yosemite Sam)
When I say WhOA… I mean WhOA!!!

hi d

Hi Lillian

Basically I agree with peeplj. Get a few inexpensive D whistles and see which you prefer. You really don’t need to worry about other keys to begin with: most of the tutorial material features tunes in D or G, both of which can be played on a standard D whistle.

I have about 25 whistles, most of which are Ds I bought in order to compare them and see what I like best. After all that experimenting I’ve found that the one that suits me best is the very first brand I ever bought!

So, check out those Feadogs, Clarkes and Generations…

THANK YOU GUYS SOOO MUCH for responding, i really appreciate the advice ! plenty of thanx !!

  That was FUNNY!!! You’ve got it bad alright… Hey!!! :imp: Now I know what happened to my missing whistles!

I swear I’m clean! I been on de’ wagon!

I was at a celt fest.. like 5 yrs ago..thought how cute, an instrument for $5.. it was a little black.. Then found another booth.. for $4.50 it was a blue clarke sweetone.. it sounded much better.. 5 years later and just getting back into it..seriously, i’de have to say after buying a gen, feadog, walton mellow D, and again two sweetones(D and C) The Sweetones are my fave $5 buck whistles, although i will admit that the c doesnt feel very in tune. Clarke Sweetone in D..wont dissappoint.( love my SYN and contrary to all.. i do like my susato D, C, B flat set)

My C wasn’t in tune with itself either. I’ve cut off about 1/4 inch off the end of the tube and it helped. Basically the D was sorta flat, high and low. Everything else was pretty close. You noticed it a lot going from C# to D.

You want to know what kind of whistle to buy?

One of mine of course!!
