What is your favourite low whistle track?

I was listening to what for 2 years has been my favourite low whistle track over the weekend, and it occurred to me that I’ve heard an awful lot more tracks over the past 2y, yet it’s still my no.1.

The track is “Corcomroe” by Davy Spillane (10th and last track on “Pipedreams”), played on an Overton bass Bb (or maybe bass C), complete with breath control struggles and so on, but IMHO totally captivating.

What’s your favourite low whistle track?

Nick

What? No takers on this one?

Be a tossup between Si Beag, Si Mor played by Deiseal, and The Pearl by Silly Wizard.

Best,

“Inisheer” from the Cherish the Ladies CD
“Out and About”. Next is “Echo’s Calling” from Joe McKenna’s CD “The Irish Low Whistle”

You love it, too? I think it’s got to be my favorite. I also recently love “Dans en Dro” by Lothlorien. Since I don’t have a low D (or their talent) I can’t exactly match their sound, but I can play along on a regular D. Quite fun.

“Inis Oirr” on the Teantrai album from Music Makers. Low D, I can’t tell what make. Most haunting and evocative. One of the pieces that convinced me to begin making whistles!
Cheers,
Bill Whedon

not sure which is my favorite, but “mr. andersons” on john mccusker’s “yella hoose” is just a beauty.

Actually, my favorite is “All That She Wants” by Ace of Base.

Just kidding!

I love ANYTHING by Lothlorien!

Even that awful song about the mother who killed her children?

The tune may be pretty, but the words are terrible. That’s what’s kept me from getting their CD–I don’t want that song on it.

Dance of the Gypsy Queen by Eoin Duignan. It’s the reason I play whistles today. I’m still surprised that Dale doesn’t have it as a recommended CD, but does have other CDs that I regret buying.

I forgot about that one. That would be a “skip track” for me. They must have been listening to Steeleye Span when they came up with it!

I downloaded my tracks from MP3.com, anyway.

I didn’t initially respond because I don’t really have a “favorite” - there’s simply too much good stuff out there to listen to.

Having said that, I mention a few CD’s that have some of my very favorite Low Whistle tunes on them:

Hevia’s first CD is how I found the Low Whistle, and then Irish Music and C&F in the first place, and I still love that recording.

Like blackhawk, I’m also an Eoin Duignan fan, he’s got some great stuff on both of his CD’s and the Gypsy queen track is really something special

How could anyone not love the Lunasa “Otherworlds” CD and the tune “Miller of Droghan” in particular?

Anyone who loves low whistle and STILL doesn’t have Eamonn Dillon’s “Storm the Kettle” is really missing out on a seriously kick ass CD.

Finally, the most intensely interesting and impressive Low Whistle tracks I’ve heard in some time are, without a doubt, on Brendan Ring’s “Troublesome Things” CD. This recording is so fascinating because it pulls together so many elements in one effort: Original compositions that are both interesting and inspiring, combined imaginative playing and stunning technique - These elements all come together fantastically well on this CD, and I’d highly recommend it for anyone who’s a fan of the Low Whistle.

All Lothlorien stuff is good, but at the moment I like Sliabh Geal gCua on Low D.
Listen to it - again on sop’ D - at fingertrip.

Click on this link for a listen to a tune from the Brendan Ring CD I mentioned - You might want to be sitting down…

P.S. Someone over on the woodenflute list suggested yesterday that Low Whistles are hindered by response problems when it comes to uptempo playing, I’ll let you be the judge

Here’s another clip from Brendan’s site: http://www.brendanring.com/slipjigforjanet.mp3
