Top Whistling CDs

I can ask our library to buy CDs from my favorite artists. What would you choose as the
10 best whistling CDs? We’ll add to the culture of my hometown.

Thanks Walt

Right now I’m listening to Totally Traditional Tin Whistles, which is a compilation put out by Ossian.

Tunes played by Willie Clancy, Miko Russell & Gussie Russell, Cathal McConnell, John Doonan, Fintan Vallely, Josie McDermott, Michael Tubridy, and Festy Conlon.

I highly recommend Joanie Madden’s Song of the Irish Whistle.

Dave

Tinwhistles by Sean Potts and Paddy Maloney
Feadog Stain 1 and 2 by Mary Bergin

Lunasa: Lunasa
Lunasa: Otherworld
Flook: Flatfish

Gentle Breeze (compilation by Green Linnet)
Planxty- Cold Blow and the Rainy Night
Laurence Nugent- Windy Gap, Two for Two

While not “only” a whistling CD, I love Gaelic Storm’s “Tree”. They’ve got one awesome whistle song called “Thirsty Work” and a lot of other great irish songs.

Listen to clips at http://www.amazon.com : Search for Gaelic Storm

Sean Ryan’s “Take the Air”. Lots of whistle fireworks.
The Totally Traditional Tinwhistles collection is pretty good too.

Donncha O Briain, anything by Micho Russell, can’t actually think of ten whistle CDs I’d want to buy, oops, Sean Potts’ group recording Bakerswell had a few nice tunes on it, nice version of the Factory girl

Paddy Keenan’s first solo album: “An Piobroch” or something like that. Mix of low whistle and pipes plus some soprano whistle too - a masterpiece.

Peter,

Do you know if the Donncha O Briain recording is still available? I tried to find it a number of times during the past couple years with no luck. I tried searching the Ossian site and it is not listed.

Rob

Walt,

A while back Dale started a thread asking everyone their favorite whistle CDs.

Maybe you can find it back in the archives
I don’t remember the date.

Since it’s for your towns library, I’d recommend including the following selections. Even though they’re not just whistle, they are Irish and will give the folks a range to find what touches their fancy.

  • Altan: The Best of Altan & Altan Live Double CD package.
  • Music at Matt Malloy’s - The closest recording of live irish sessions at their best.
  • Lunasa: Otherworld
  • Deanta - Whisper A Secret
  • Lothlorian - Greenwood Side (available through http://www.mp3.com)
  • Green Linnet Record Celtophile Series: The Dance Music of Ireland - Jigs and Reels.
  • Green Linnet Records’ the Twentieth Aniversary Collection.
  • Green Linnet Records’ the 25 years of Celtic Music.

I’m assuming that you library has albums from some of the other generally popular groups like the Chieftains, Clannad, Enya.

The 8 selections above should give your a library a rich selection of Irish music that open folks up to whistle and flute in the genre.

As you listen to these, my wish for you is …

Enjoy Your Music,

Lee Marsh

The new CD by Frank Cassidy ‘Tin Air’ that Dale previewed in the latest Newsletter is well worth a listen.

Frank lives here in Ottawa and shows up at our weekly session now and then. I had the priviledge of attending the launching of this great CD. He’s one great whistle player. It contains a lot of original material and some other great stuff also.

Cheers

Aha! Great, Gerry - I was told about Frank recently by a friend and was looking out for news of his whereabouts and music. I guess I should read the newsletter! Thanks for the tip.
