Thanks to Board members typical help, I got the sheet music for Dougie Maclean’s The Gael. I then looked for a recommended cd that includes the tune, The Search; I found it for over $120 new! from private sellers at Amazon and at least $40 used from their private sellers. Other sites didn’t even have that cd listed. Fortunately, I searched and found that tune included in a regularly priced 2-cd, The Essential Dougie Maclean. Do they really expect anyone to pay that much for a cd? (I guess so)
Even rarity can be overpriced. And rarity alone is not valuable. Let’s say I cut a cd and it’s the only one ever anywhere (and with good reason), still ain’t worth squat.
Sometimes people think if, e.g., a custom knife maker only makes a few pieces and then dies that the knives are then somehow worth a lot. That’s not so (I am a collector); there needs to have been enough of them around to have created some buzz for the knives. Randall knives are still in production, are all over the place and are really semi production line and they sell like hotcakes over a long period with ever increasing value.
A crappy out of print book isn’t worth much.
But, I guess your point is that a well regarded piece of work from a well regarded artist that’s no longer available on the retail market can sell for a bunch on the secondary market.
