What British progs should the Americans put on PBS?

Elesewhere hereabouts there is a thread where our American friends are discussing which Brit shows they watch on PBS.

Now, which shows do you think they should be watching to learn about us?

Avanutria, for the purposes of this survey you are hereby declared an honourary Brit (Gawdelpya).

They should put Doctor Who back on.

Dad’s Army. (The true story of how we won the war, and not a John Wayne in sight).

Bill and Ben. (It’ll explain much about those of us of a certain age).

Captain Pugwash. (It’ll explain even more about those of us of a certain age).

House of Cards (You might think that, I couldn’t possibly comment - although I believe it may already have been shown in the US).

Edit: Nuts, I forgot “Blackadder”

Bremner Bird & Fortune

Have I got News For You

One Foot in the Grave

Mr Benn

Keeping Up Appearances (so they can see what my mother is like)

Who needs PBS? Here, we get BBC America.

Redwolf

I think Keeping up Appearances has been on, and I know Blackadder was.

We do get a watered-down Americanized version of the BBC news, but I’d kind of like to see the real thing. I know I can check it on line at http://news.bbc.co.uk/ but it would be interesting to watch.

Weren’t most of the successful US sitcoms and game shows originally from the BBC? All in the Family was adapted from one of yours, and Whose Line is it Anyway, probably lots more that I can’t think of right offhand.

What are our other choices? My grandmother was from England and I have some cousins there, so I really should know more about what’s going on there.

Rising Damp

Porridge

The Goodies

The Generation Game (Bruce Forsythe era)

Consternation Street

Depressed Enders

OK Gary, but you have to deal with all the posts asking where to find the signature tune.

How about Little Britain, if only for Tom Baker’s links.

Old Blue Peter shows (Chris Trace vintage) and anything they can dredge up with Jack Hargreaves in it.

The Fast Show (especially Ralph & Ted) and Goodness Gracious Me.

Oh, dear.

My sincere condolences, Martin.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Geez, do you have an aunt and uncle like Daisy and Onslow too?

PS, Martin, did you know your hero Hugh Laurie is in an American drama (“House”)? I hear it’s pretty good, but I just crack up every time I see Bertie Wooster playing an American doctor. Actually, your avatar brings a smile to my face every time I see it.

I’ve seen the trailers, but I haven’t caught the show. Hugh Laurie also does more voiceovers for TV ads than any other actor on British TV, though Stephen Fry gets a fair share, and Sean Pertwee (son of the late Jon, Doctor #3) is doing very well.

We don’t mention my aunt and uncle, thank you.

Actually, in all honesty my mother is a great woman, a great and very welcoming hostess, and

Always glad to raise a smile, even by proxy, and I maintain that Wooster’s expression there sums up my usual reaction to life, the Chiffyverse, and everyFipp.

Oh and I forgot to mention “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” and “Jeeves & Wooster” because they’re great.

What American programs should they watch in the UK?

THE SIMPSONS

Oh, wait - I think they already have it…

I like “Have](http://www.ukgameshows.com/index.php/Have_I_Got_News_For_You%3F%22%3EHave) I Got News For You” but I miss a lot of the people references :really: and have to get it translated.

The Office

Little Britain

People Like Us

Taking Over the Asylum

Nighty, Night

Bedtime

There are others but that’s enough to be going on with.

Hmmm, let’s see if I can figure out where this icon is coming from . . .

Apparently so.

This seems to be Avanutria’s trademark now, so I won’t use it here. But, I’d like to copy it over to my school’s board so that I can use it on my students. It’s my usual expression when dealing with them.

Mind if I do that? If I can figure out how.

What he said.

Hahaha, I’ve no exclusive rights to it - Chiffers have used it before, including me. Click on “View more Emoticons” when you’re making a post, and a popup window with more images comes up. It’s in there.

We don’t. The only channels we get are:

VHF:
KJRH (National Broadcasting Company)
KOTV (Columbia Broadcasting System)
KTUL (American Broadcasting Company)
KOED (Oklahoma Educational Television Authority-- PBS Affiliate)

UHF:
KDOR (Trinity Broadcasting Network)
KWBT (Warner Bros.)
KOKI (Fox Broadcasting)
KRSC (independent educational station)
KTFO (United Paramount Network)
KTPX (Pax TV)
KWHB (LeSEA Broadcasting)
KGEB (Oral Roberts Ministries)

And we also get a few stations from Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas, but these are the same networks listed above.

Actually, we do get BBC World Service radio, overnight on the NPR station.

Jumping Jellyfish, that’s no problem! Tis the Trumpet Hornpipe I reckon, an’ the swabs can learn by ear 'ere! Aarrrr! Matey!
