I’m back in the mando game after having to take some time off due to Repetitive Strain issues with my left wrist/forearm. The problems still aren’t solved, but flute playing bothers me more than mando at this point, so I bought a nice used Eastman 504 to work on a bit. Now I need some new tunage…
So, what mando music have you been listening to lately? I’m still digging Sam Bartlett’s “Evil Diane” and downloaded that to my iPhone from the iTunes store. Sweet. Could use some other ideas for things to check out though. Looking for Trad and non-trad. Will probably get Rich Delgrosso’s blues CD, as I love the blues.
Gimme some ideas gang, I’m mando music starved at the moment!
I love Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill’s latest CD, Welcome Home Again.
Cahill plays guitar on most cuts, but does some wonderful mandolin work, on a few others.
Mandolin is still my main instrument, but that’s a holdover from years past, back before I got into ITM… I haven’t heard a whole lot of ITM that, to me, sounds like it calls out for mandolin in particular.
But, one disc that stands out is by Alec Finn and Kevin MacLeod, “Polbain to Oranmore.” Lots of mando and bouzouki and, I think, tenor guitar. They make the mando sound good in ITM. In particular, the first track sounds great on mando.
Lots of good stuff suggested already, but here are a couple more. Shooglenifty which not purely trad but good music, Frank Cullen writes some good tunes on the thing may be hard to find his stuff on this side of the pond though, and there is some good Mando on “There Were Roses” by Mick Moloney, Jimmy Keane, and Robbie O’Connel with Liz Carroll. Of course I should put in a good word for my teacher Kieran Hanrahan who has a Mandolin Album out, despite the fact that he is mainly a Banjo player.
I just never get tired of this CD. Really nice Irish mandolin - with very nice ornamentation. The jigs are played a bit slower - more like “piping speed” and they really sound nice and “swingy”. (if there was such a word)
Andy Irvine - “Rain On The Roof”. Typically brilliant playing from Andy on Mando, bouzouki and octave mando. It’s available through his website. Also “How To Grow A Woman from the Ground” by Chris Thile. Great stuff.
