One time I played a gig with a Big Band in a bar in a cave that was part of a retirement community in western Arkansas. (really)
Thank you, Bloomey, for the persuasive explanation
of why fiddling leads to insanity and death. I have nothing
more to add, except a story from my childhood.
There was an elderly fellow
with a bald head appearing
on TV kiddy shows, who would play tunes on his skull
with two metal mallets. He could change the notes
by opening and closing his mouth.
He had pretty good tone, but as the years
went by the mallets took their toll.
He became glassy eyed and obsessed,
and would mutter strange things about Wagner.
Finally he appeared one Weds on Howdy Doody,
I think it was, and announced that he would perform
The Ring of the Nieberlungs (sp?). When they
dragged him offstage, the mallets were dripping
gore. Never saw him again.
Cool, I thought.
I’ve got to give this a try! But that’s another story. Best
And would this explain your choice in careers, Jim?
Huh?
Merely a smartaleck remark on the imagery of beating one’s noggin and the ties it has to tackling philosophical problems. ![]()
Hope no offense was taken…
