Weedies New Whistle..

G’day all,
Just thought you’d like to see a photo of my new whistle…taking my fondness for Americans to a new level !!
It was made in the 1940’s and is quite a nice player with a gentle sound and just a little bit of ‘chiffy’..Pitched somewherearound D
Whistle cost…US$10.00…Postage cost…US$15.00 :astonished:
Those posties can sure take the cream off a bargain…cop it sweet though.
Thats all for now..adios amigos…

Yankee Whistle

That’s very American! Did you find it on E-Bay? I assume it’s metal? I wonder who made it…?

Cheers!
Bill

you gonna play “Star Spangled Banner” on that gaudy contraption? lol! I hope it plays nicely for you.

How very Red White and Blue it is!

Yes …it was an Ebay purchase and it IS metal…on the underside in tiny letters it says " Made in USA " …
I really like it…
Also,I forgot to add that there is a wooden block in the fipple…like the early Clarke’s…

Hey Folks…ya would’nt believe it,but I just saw ANOTHER one of these on the Ebay…21 hours to go..

Incredible…

If it is old? I would check it for lead solder on the bottom seam, and lead based paint.

I bought one of those years ago in an antique shop for $11. It’s actually not a bad little whistle with a lot of antique charm It’s very much like a Clarke, but with a better windway and edge. Mine as I recall is in C and plays really well. They do show up from time to time on eBay and the like.
It probably does have lead solder, but I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s well painted over, and besides I doubt you could absorb enough lead through your thumb tips to do any harm. Actually, as I look at the whistle there may not be any solder at all, just a very well formed tight crimp. By all means snatch one of these up if you get a chance.

The one up now is cheap enough, but did you check that shipping?? :astonished: And you thought you paid a lot on yours! Priority is expensive to you guys!

I figured out why it was showing such a high shipping cost … see subsequent post below.

That whistle needs some red, white, and blue streamers and maybe some sparklers. Or a flag that pops out the bottom when the super high D is hit.

Well, looks nice anyhow. I just expected e fife being something else. :really:

Silvano

You would probably have to eat the whole whistle to do yourself any damage. The seller of said whistle could make a profit if he gave them away and just charged his shipping charges. :boggle:

Actually, the shipping is what the post office charges for priority to Australia. No profiteering going on. The link shows the shipping as it was when the OP has his calculated, it is the usual when I had it calculated for my locale. Whew! I thought that was awfully high too. Some sellers do indeed make their money on their so-called “shipping”, but this isn’t one of them.
(I just ran into this myself, having packed a book going to Australia in a Priority box… what costs $5.50 to send here in the US cost $25 to send Down Under!!)

That is not a whistle, that is a fife! It says so on it!

Look at the Dixie Fife

Defiantly the same style.

It seems to have a very strange style of cheater though.

Good …fun… replies folks…I hoped y’all would get a grin from the whistle/photo…
Postage is a big issue on Ebay stuff…I’m having a bit of a bun fight at the moment over an Item…
The thing is,a lot of sellers immediately want to send stuff by Priority Post…( I’m talking US sales here)…and it is super expensive…I bought a flute recently and the bloke  wanted US$35.00 to send it..
My prefered option is US Postal Service ..First Class Mail International…I’ve had Flutes and Ocarinas sent to me using this service and (touch wood) have never had a problem…and so the above ‘Postal Bandit’ could have sent me the Flute using First Class mail for US$11.00 or so instead of $35..some of these scoundrels feel that they dont get enough money for the auction item,so they sting the unfortunate buyer for a few extra $$'s on post…and thats just not cricket old chap ! …
Just looked at the Ebay auction for the other ‘Yankee Whistle’… about 40 minutes to go !!!..

So are you going to get the matching tutorial book?
All American Fife Flageolette Course

You know you need it. It will answer questions like “What are those numbers by the holes for?” and “What music was played on this?” and “What songs in the 1930’s were deemed suitable for instruction?” Perhaps it will answer questions you cannot even think to ask until after you read through it.

I WANT it…I WANT it…badly !!!
ID.10.T…thats brilliant, who’d of thought that there was someting like this around ??
Its interesting to see Fred Gretsch’s name on the bottom…I have a few Gretsch plastic Ocarinas from the 1940’s…this could shine a light on the maker of this whistle…was it one Fred’s I wonder…??
Thanks for that link…I going to check it out now…may as well have the complete set!!!
see yer…
