WARNING: Fake on eBay

I disagree entirely and completely with you, and will leave it at that.

Check out all the edited posts (on this forum) by Migoya that have no text. I’ll leave it at that.

Whatever.

Jesus glauber what are you on. What the f##k does it matter who David Migoya is. He may be extremely knowledgeable but that doesn’t mean the rest of us must know nothing.

All I said was if he knows best, tell the seller and see what he says. If David says he’s told the seller then maybe he’s entitled to rant.

Jessie seems to have made the only sensible point for a little while. If Migoya said in the first post that he had advised the seller and he’d ignored him, maybe the rest of us wouldn’t have wasted our time.

When I first saw this auction I thought it was a fairly decent english mid-19th century flute which has been very misleadingly described by somebody who claims not to know better. I just ignored all the bollocks in the description. Most top quality flutes have a makers stamp, flutes that don’t are not made by these makers whatever spin you try and put on it. And no David I wouldn’t touch your theoretical Rudall & Rose without a number and a picture that proves it is what you claim.

Ken

you know, sometimes I ought to just smack myself for even bothering.

Who David is and what his credentials are have less to do with this than what he had to say. There are plenty of flutes incorrectly described on Ebay that David never mentions; this one, it seems, was a deliberate attempt to bring the price higher by being misleading, pretending to be an only slightly misinformed seller but probably was, in fact, a well informed huckster. Since a flute of high caliber can bring an extremely high price, David felt that he ought to warn or dissuade the uninformed among us from going there and spending our sometimes overzealous flute money on this particular flute.
David’s credentials are quite impressive, but he is also a very nice, honest guy.
Those calling him nasty and snooty ought to re-read some of their own posts.

Now, gentlemen - and ladies, of course - would you like to join us in the library for a drink of your choice?

Yes, I can own up to that, certainly.

The thread is too heated, I think, and
was from the first.
Appreciate why and, well, it creates
various side effects that detract
from the purpose.

Also the ad on
e bay doesn’t look kosher. Best

David,
Thank you for taking your time to share your observations about the specific claims of the seller of this flute. I found the details enlightening and useful and on topic.

While you’re at it, please smack me a couple too.

LOL Glauber! Copy & Paste is a wonderful thing, ain’t it?

Glauber, you made my day!
I smacked myself, then fell down laughing.

And Glauber, Zina is telling the truth. I’ve been playing the Pratten quite a bit lately. (Even Gordon on list has seen it, played it, etc.)
As I’ve always said…it ain’t worth anything if it’s not played.

Cool. I’m gravitating towards smaller holes now. I’m liking the M&E better than the Cotter :astonished: and i’ve been playing ITM on the traverso even.

I’ve been watching this auction too, but just discovered your’all editorials.

I don’t think it works to contact the seller in this situation, but it certainly is appropriate to contact the bidders, present your evidence, and let them make up their own minds. You can send messages to the bidders, you know, and they can withdraw their bids if they like. I’ve seen this happen before.

I notice the seller did add an explanation.

I feel I need to respond to the accusation “a fake on ebay”. First of all I wish to apologise for the misleading description, which led to this being taken up by the members of the Chiff & Fipple flute forum. I presume that this forum is intended as a bulletin board to promote open and honest discussion, and designed to pass on to its members and readers, interesting and constructive thoughts on the subject of flutes. I have, up until now, no real knowledge on the subject of flutes, antique or modern, and constructed a description on my own from searching web sights, corresponding with the same and asking players and makers. I had no intention of hoodwinking any potential buyers and knew full well that questions would ensue, giving me the opportunity to explain in more detail what was on offer. In these email discussions I have found out much more of the “possibles” and some of the definate “nots”. I am withdrawing from the auction, not on admission of a fake, but on the admission of misrepresentation, though this was not through intention. I must also make very clear that Mr. Williams never gave me any indication who made this flute. I ask that his name is never again mentioned on any open domain, or privately, regarding this flute. One last thing in my defence. I replied to Mr. Migoya’s email straight away.

f1anm1an, I believe you.

Well, ended well all around, then.

David, I really hope you keep those warnings coming! You do us all a good service.

–James

whomever the seller is (why is it people don’t stand in front of what they say or sell instead of hiding behind a fake name?), congratulations on a well-made choice.

Perhaps a better-considered description (it does look like a nice copy flute of a Clementi-Nicholson), instead of likening it to what it is not, call it what it indeed is.

And I’m very pleased to see he has a friend in Jessie.
It figures.

Yes .Well done Jessie K in having the wit to make the elementary distinction between a misdescribed flute and a fake flute .Unfortunately , because of basic legal ignorance or difficulty in the use of English there seem to be a few who aren’t up to it .
