Waltons Whistle with Tutorial...Review Please..

Hi,
I have some whistles and some books on learning the whistle.
Trouble is I am thinking it might be easier to learn with one of these CD/Tape with Whistle packages?
This would give me an idea how the whistle should sound, or will it???

Has any one used these sets???
Thanks

Dazed

I have the MelBay 110 Ireland’s Best Tinwhistle tunes, book and 2CD set. I think the book is great–I’ve learned about two-thirds of the tunes and there’s really only one or two that I don’t like. They are arranged in sections of order of difficulty.

I think that the CD accompaniment stinks. It’s all right if you just want to know basically how the tune sounds but I can’t imagine anyone listening to it for pleasure. Extremely unpleasing performances.

Tony,

I second Michael’s comments. The tunebooks I have (not Mel Bay but Waltons) have 2CD sets with them, and are great for learning the tunes, though no good for listening, but then I don’t see how they could perform both functions well. Having CDs rather than tapes is ideal, as you can set a tune to repeat, and keep hammering until you have it nailed.

I also transfer the recordings onto mimidisc so I can listen while travelling. Having a tune thoroughly in your head is the best way to learn it, even if you don’t have a whistle in hand at the time.

I also have the Bill Ochs tutor that comes in a pack with the Clarke Tin Whistle. More varied tunes, though my copy was on tape - I have transferred it to Minidisc for convenience.
