Uilleann Pipes on Ebay

In case you all hadn’t noticed, there is a pretty kickass looking set of antique pipes on Ebay at the moment – the current price is about $5,100.00, with a buttload of time left on the auction . . . :astonished:

Wow. How did this one get past us?

There seems to be writing on one of the chanters. I can see what looks like “WHITE”. There seems to be one letter (E or F) before WHITE and two words below it. Can anyone make it out?

In the Sean Reid Society Journal, Mark Walstrom lists pipemaker Edward (Ned) W. White as active from 1860 to 1880 in Athenry, Loughrea, Roxbury, and Boston.

This chanter appears to be stamped E White Roxbury Mass.

Roxbury could be the 2nd word. Could the 3rd be Mass. ?

This looks to be on the chanter previously identified by some as a Coyne.

Alright - so what happened to the original thread on this sale?

Yeah, where’d it go.

So it’s a Ned White chanter and not a Coyne. i guessed Willie Rowsome, wrong again but I’ll take a chance and guess the chanter with the yellow plastic mounts is a Crowley.

Tommy

I too logged on to specifically look at this thread and there is was Gone !!!

Has our friendly neighbourhood locksmith removed it

Pity about the ‘White’ Coyne.

Chris

Yes, pity. White isn’t quite the same. Rare enough though.

Someone got a bit excited on the other thread, put his foot in it and there it went

Ah yes, that explains some anomalies, like the nickel silver keys and the almost-but-not-quite-right shape of the foot mount. I was thinking the foot mount was a replacement.

The new photos are worlds better than the old ones… shame the seller didn’t go stamp hunting (and borrow a better digital camera?) earlier tho.

Very clever Chris, I like it.

Yes, the other thread has been removed to a place of safety, aka ‘Limbo’. There was a bit of a disturbance, and rather than go through and remove the offending posts, I removed the topic… and so it goes.

Not wishing to drag this thread OT, but the other thread contained many interesting and relevant posts. Is there any way that you could restore it (minus the OT posts of course).

I removed it for editing purposes, it has now been restored.

I restored the thread at roughly 6 am EST. All you guys had to do was look.

mission accomplished

edited to remove all references to cheese, chocolate, beef jerky, and corrugated steel, and the use of the same whilst playing the pipes.

Looks like it reads: R. White Roxbury Mass.

Anyone familiar with this maker?

I think you can be sure enough it’s E. (Ned) White.

I have some photos of a White set, or at least some parts are White’s, but that was possibly made before his emigration so comparing stamps would not work (I’ll have a look anyway)

E. (as in Edward) White - i.e. “Ned White”. Mark Walstrom’s list in SRSv2 indicates that he was active in Ireland (Athenry IIRC) and the US 1840-1880.

a Ned White set (not) in de hands of Rob van Dijk

Is it my imagination or is the tenor reg bent?

Yes it is bent
