Tyghre just made the whistle do a cool thing!

He took my Gen D and inserted it into the Soodlum D, blew the Soodlum and moved the Gen in and out like a slide. No tune that I can figure, but a very neat sound!

Anyone else have nifty tricks?

My two year old daughter takes my Clarke D and shoves it into my Waltons…it’s a neat way to remove the black paint.

She has also had relative success remodeling our home with my Chieftan low E…I left it where she could find it and now one of our double-pane windows is a single-pane window (I got into more trouble than she did…PLUS I had to sweep up all the glass) Now THAT’S a neat whistle trick!!!

Every day she shows me more and more cool things that whistles can be used for!! For instance…did you know that you could use a Generation Bb to core apples???

Anyhoo, I’m looking forward to seeing what other neat tricks people can do with whistles!

Eric

Take one of your inexpensive, waterproof whistles into the swimming pool or lake sometime. Cover all the fingerholes, then insert the bottom end into the water, and start to blow. Plunge it in and out of the water for a watery slide effect.
Playing with wet fingers afterwards is also pretty funny. A film of water will cover some of the holes, so you don’t get all the notes you think you should be getting.
Do NOT try these with a good wooden whistle…

Actually, the whistle is an amazingly subtle and expressive percussion instrument. It can be played in three different ways:

  1. Play as you normally would, only don’t breath into the fipple. (Cessation of breathing not recommended for long periods of time. To avoid asphyxiation, try breathing through the nostrils.)

  2. Slap the fipple (top hole thingy down) against the palm of your hand. Kinda tricky, but you can make an interesting sound if you do it just right.

  3. Use either side of the whistle as a sort of “drumstick” on your hand or leg. (Do not try this on a prosthetic limb. Dents may occur.)

Southpaw, I did just that on my cast yesterday! not the same resonance as a half filled glass of beer, but a nice solid thunky sound.

Tyg, my Susado makes a really nice drinking straw for me, a chronic dieter!

There is no wrong way to play the whistle. Every style is as unique as every person. Self expression is crucial in building confidence through whistling. Therefore, let us all seek new and ingenious was to play.

(I personally like to use my nose.)

Dr. Nemo Pudsy, with all do respect,

YOU LIKE TO PLAY WITH YOUR NOSE?!?!?!?!?!

ok. I’m finished.

There is no reason to discriminate against the nose. If my nose feels comfortable playing the whistle, I have no objection.

Also, you may spell the word “due” (as in “all DUE respect”)in any way you wish. I have no desire to be intolerant of the spelling preferences of others. However, the correct way is, as I have spelled it above, D-U-E. But either way YOU choose to spell it, I will still respect and support you.

Dear Tyghress and followers of WhOA-chi!

The following is not for the timid! If you have a Generation,Clarke or other thin metal whistle, you can make it a Ti-tzu whistle. This will have a strong string-like tone.

1st, remove the whistle head and insert a short piece of wooden dowel into the body of the whistle to the first(top)hole. On the back side, between the top and the first hole, use a metal punch(round or square)no larger than 1/2 the bore diameter to make a long slot or long oval hole of about 1 inch.

Cut a patch of celophane plastic from a potato chip bag(the noisier the better)and glue it over the slot with rubber cement. Before it dries, push it a little into the slot so the celophane will be a little loose over the slot. The similarity to a “Kazoo” should be evident. Whistle away! Humming while playing has a different effect too.

Okay…for those who can’t afford uilleann pipes:-

Tape a harmonica to a mini-vacuum [in the UK and Ireland it’s called a dustbuster…dunno the US translation] so that the machine will suck a G or a D note through the harmonica.

This will be your drone.

Now play your whistle !!!

A festival in the Scottish Highlands where adults can learn to play household items???

Dustbuster (U.K. and Ireland) = Dustbuster (U.S.). Strange!
