Tuning Generations...

I recently got the full set of Generation Nickel whistles from the whistle shop (i just wanted the Bb and Eb, but my mother insisted on the full set); the tone is pretty good, but has a slight buzz on some of them. I’ll have to get all the extraneous bits of plastic out.
Anyway, as one would expect, all of them are terribly sharp except for the Bb (it’s now my fav whistle…). I’ve tried to loosen the glue seal with hot water, and it didn’t work (at least not much). Has Generation started using Krazy Glue or something? I had to put it in boiling water to get it to move , like, a millimeter.
Any thoughts?
(Sorry if I’m posting a question that is asked frequently. I tried search and didn’t get anything helpful.)

Tim, what works for me to get the fipples off a Gen, is that I put a cup of water in the microwave for 2 minutes. Be extremely careful, as it will be VERY hot when it’s done. Then I put the Gen in, head first, and leave it in for 2 more minutes. Then I take a thick towel and double it over twice or three times (because the hot water may soak thru anything less) and twist the fipple right off. Let me know how that works for you.

I’ve always had to use hot water to loosen Generation heads. No idea whybthey glue them to start with.

Oddly, my Bbs were also in tune from the get go.

I used boiling water as well, I’d dunk it in for 15 - 20 seconds, and then use a towel to pull on it, dunk it in again, etc, etc…

It takes a good bit of force to yank the things off, especially the C’s for some reason, you just have to get kinda rough with the stupid things. Show 'em who’s boss.

Be careful not to melt the plastic mouthpeice though, I wouldn’t leave it in boiling water for more than half a minute, at most.

If the water is too hot you can warp the plastic, causing it to crack when the tube is reinserted. (Trust me on that!)

I personally use 150 Deg F water AND WAIT A LONG TIME. This will loosten the glue, which resembles Elmer’s white glue.

The C Gens are the toughest to remove. I use a piece of 1X6 pine with a hole drilled in it to just clear the tube. I place it across a plastic 5 gallon bucked. With the tube sticking out of the hole, you stand on the board and pull real hard. The head drops into bucket.

Sorry, if that sounds gross!

Guess who used to work Madame La Guillotine in a previus life…

For anybody who is interested…I finally got them all in tune…
the C and the F were the hardest…I ended up cracking the fipple a little on both. I sealed it up (hoping to keep it from getting bigger) with Elmer’s Glue. The head popped off all the others easily…
Now if I can just fix the tone on some of them…(Don’t bother commenting on that…I already know to consult the main webpage for info on that)
