Hi…I was just checking out the whistle section here at C&F and read that Generation whistles are tunable. I have a G and would LOVE to tune it…It’s just off a tiny bit…but enough to sound awful with the band. How do I tune it?
Thanks WWB

Check out another article in the Chiff and Fipple Department of Flageolet Surgeons:
Loosen the head by immersion in HOT, but not boiling water, but be careful no to melt the plastic.
This melts the glue, and the head can be twisted off (hold head & body in towels to avoid burnt fingers. Wipe off the glue & put the head back on. The head can then be adjusted for tuning, normally it needs pulling out a little from the original position.
This can be done on any Generation or similar style of whistle.
Good Luck!

The WHISTLE head. (You can’t be too careful with these instructions to Newbies).
Actually, it took boiling water to rip the head off of my Generation C and quite a bit of pulling.
It didn’t melt, or warp, but I only put it in for about 20 seconds at a time, then took it out and pulled at it for a few seconds before I dunked it back in.
It took me about a half an hour to yank the thing off, and I have a pretty good grip. The whistles in other keys don’t seem to give up as much a fight, though, as I got the heads off the D and Bb without much trouble…
