I’m starting to like where my G, F#, and E rolls are, but my A rolls are not great and my B rolls are terrible. I tend to like to work on passages from tunes rather than separate exercises (eg I work on the B part of Humours of Tulla for F# rolls), and would love some suggestions of tunes with a lot of opportunities for A or B rolls (or both). I’ve been going through my session recordings and albums looking for good ones, and am working on the Em Toss the Feathers for B rolls, but any other suggestions would be great.
If you have difficulty with L hand rolls, look to your hold. Simply banging away at practicing them won’t solve the problem and may worsen it because of tension. If you get your flute support right, all your fingers should be equally free to move and the L hand rolls should be just as easy as the R hand or between hands ones.
Thanks, some of these I know, a couple I don’t I’ll work on all of them. I think the issue is related to what Jem said- I had (and sometimes still have) a lot of tension in my left hand. I’ve worked it out (mostly), but it’s a relatively recent phenomenon so I’m not yet comfortable with the rolls in that hand. Mostly it’s getting them in a consistent rhythm, so I’ve been practicing them slow. I like the tunes because I find it helps to play in and out of them, not just practice them in a vacuum.
Ive tried and tried to do B rolls with the standard grip, but I just can’t get the freedom that I get with pipers grip, where the rolls are very natural to me. Too long in the tooth I fear.
