TUNE IDENTIFICATION

Hi all,

I found this great tune played by Brian Finegan on youtube, does anyone have an idea of the name and if its available in ABC or real notation, someone says the name at the start which
sounds a bit like menage, but its quite poor quality so I can’t be sure, any help appreciated,
for the name and if the notes are about and any info on the tune i.e origin etc.

all the best sponge

Yes, they ID it as “Le ménage” at the start. Brian humorously calls it “Le”.

Added: OK, I found it. It’s The Pernod Waltz: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/4232

Thanks MTguru,

you have a real talent for finding tunes, do I need to transpose this as the notation has a a D sharp, or am I reading it wrong???

cheers sponge

It works very nicely on a D whistle, if you half-hole the D#.

Yes, it’s a d#. French musette style waltzes are often quite chromatic. Just half hole the d# with the tip of the B3 finger.

Nice, I wasn’t familiar with that.

Incidentally, it seems there is a growing movement against the use of tune titles altogether. Surely, they’ve been the bane of my existence for these long years. Someone on the mustard board posted a link to this fascinating story:

Oooo! Another waltz!

That’s a brave aspiration, but it won’t hold up against the opposition movement of giving a new name to a tune every time you mention it.

Did Coltrane name any of his tunes when he played whistle?

The track listing on the penny whistle tapes is given as follows:
“Medley: Pennies from Heaven - Penny Arcade - Penniless Pauper from Poughkeepsie - A Penny for Your Thoughts/ Trane Whistle/ Copper Penny Keepsake/ Lincoln’s Log Cabin Blues/ Whistle While You Work/ Lazy Bird.”

Best wishes.

MT, get the net. I just hooked a big one.

He gave up doing that after being repeatedly misquoted. Went back to sax and wrote that song about the Motown girl group he liked so much.
