Hi, everybody, It is almost time for dulcimer week at Mt. View, AR. Can’t wait, but would like to take along a couple of whistles. My whistle collection lives in the nice, deluxe case I bought especially for them. But I would like to take my Dixon tunables along - I have always wanted to play along with dulcimers and have never gotten the chance. I want to take the D and the A. They are plastic models. Question: if I wrap them up real good in soft cloth and put them in the pocket of the dulcimer case, would they be safe enough?
Hey, Dulcimerbabe – welcome to the Chiff!
I just discovered this past week how great an A whistle is for accompanying a mountain dulcimer. Love being able to play the low A, B & C notes. If you mean a MD instead of an HD, why not lay the whistles in the case with the dulcimer, along the fretboard? It would be a bit more protection than an outside pocket.
Have fun at Mt. View!
Thanks for the advice. Yes, I mean a mountain dulcimer. One of the main reasons I bought the A Whistle is to play along with dulcimers. So much of what I play on the D whistle is actually in the key of G - to go down and play the notes below the tonic. I was debating about inside with my dulcimer or in the outside pocket. I was a little concerned that the whistles rolling around might scratch the dulcimer. I guess I could wrap them up really well and try. Yes, we will have fun at Mt. View - this will be my 8th dulcimer week.
8th dulcimer week? Wow, that’s 5 years more than I’ve been playing dulcimer. ![]()
If you crochet or knit, make a pouch to fit the whistles – or stitch a towel to make a handy quick whistle pocket. There are lots of options to keep the whistles covered to protect the dulcimer … even a rubber band will help.
This is a good use for all those unpaired socks that turn up in the laundry-- they make good impromptu whistle cases. Heavy hiking socks are the best.
Do you wash them first, or do you find that they hum in the appropriate key?
I carry an Alba F in my MD case. I wrap the whistle in the cloth I use too wipe off the dulcimer. Sometimes its a CB folk flute instead of the whistle. For my other essential whistles I have a trifold case my wife made for me which I carry in a brief case with music, other whisles, and a soprano recorder. I will pickup a new MD at the Dublin Irish festival. Have fun.
