Top players....which flutes?

It has struck me from time to time, that I am often curious to know which flute any individual “top” player is playing.
And if you think of that question, and then go look up on the internet, its often quite hard to find out.

So…

…how about starting a thread in which people that are certain they know who plays what can add a player and a flute to the list…

OK…away we go !!!

Boyd

Matt Molloy Boosey & Hawkes

If you go to this page

http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO2_CD2.htm

and click on “Artist details” there is a good list of who’s playing what on the various Wooden Flute Obsession CDs.

Doc

Thanks…although not wholly accurate

eg Nuala Kennedy actually plays a Wilkes, and has done for a good few years

Just like the rest of us, the good players can change flute along the way too!

Seamus Egan, Matt Molloy & Mike Rafferty play Olwells.

Peter Phippin (Famous World Flute guy) plays a Copley for Irish stuff. He also has a large selection of Olwell bamboos in various keys.

Gary Stroutsos, another famous World Flute guy, recently came by the house and fell in love with and took home a Billy Miller Bamboo low Bb. But he ain’t playin’ anything Irish on it.

Joannie Madden plays a Boehm (Miyazawi maybe?)

Doc

Not so. Not for over five years now. Matt Molloy plays an Olwell.

I think Liam Kelly has switched to a Grinter. Kevin Crawford plays one, and John Wynne thanks Mike Grinter {and is playing a non-Murray-looking or sounding flute} on his latest CD (?).

Louise Mulcahy plays a Cotter D and Eb and a Murray C. John Skelton plays Olwell D, C, Eb?, Burns Bb and Copley F (last I saw).

oops. you said “certain,” didn’t you?

June McCormack credits Olwell and Grinter on the latest Draiocht CD.

david levine played a wylde…until his dog ate it

I tip my hat to anyone who can keep track of what flutes Levine was playing and when he played 'em.

Mike McGoldrick and John Kelly also play Grinters.

Accurate only for the recorded tracks, and to the extent informed by the player themselves. BTW, also not uncommon for a player to borrow a flute they prefer to use for a recording vs. a live performance or session playing.

Perhaps someone with better eyes can squint a bit to see the stamps…

Barry Kerr is playing a grinter flute now as well

Desy Adams has D and Eb boxwood Murray flutes

john skelton plays an Olwell; just saw him a few weeks ago with it. He says it’s only the 3rd D concert flute he’s ever owned and played. He uses a Casey Burns Bflat as well.

And it’s made of cocus. The burn Bb is mopane.

Josh Dukes used to play a boxwood Olwell, but now plays a Beckett I believe.

I believe Matt Malloy plays a Burns Bb as well.
Kurt

He played a Blackwood Bb Flute made by Hawkes back on the “Heathery Breeze” CD. But, as we have seen, flute players have been known to move on different flutes, as the whim takes them.
