It has struck me from time to time, that I am often curious to know which flute any individual “top” player is playing.
And if you think of that question, and then go look up on the internet, its often quite hard to find out.
So…
…how about starting a thread in which people that are certain they know who plays what can add a player and a flute to the list…
Hammy Hamilton - Hammy Hamilton
Skip Healy - Skip Healy
Eamonn Cotter - Eamonn Cotter
Seamus Egan, Matt Molloy & Mike Rafferty play Olwells.
Peter Phippin (Famous World Flute guy) plays a Copley for Irish stuff. He also has a large selection of Olwell bamboos in various keys.
Gary Stroutsos, another famous World Flute guy, recently came by the house and fell in love with and took home a Billy Miller Bamboo low Bb. But he ain’t playin’ anything Irish on it.
I think Liam Kelly has switched to a Grinter. Kevin Crawford plays one, and John Wynne thanks Mike Grinter {and is playing a non-Murray-looking or sounding flute} on his latest CD (?).
Louise Mulcahy plays a Cotter D and Eb and a Murray C. John Skelton plays Olwell D, C, Eb?, Burns Bb and Copley F (last I saw).
Accurate only for the recorded tracks, and to the extent informed by the player themselves. BTW, also not uncommon for a player to borrow a flute they prefer to use for a recording vs. a live performance or session playing.
john skelton plays an Olwell; just saw him a few weeks ago with it. He says it’s only the 3rd D concert flute he’s ever owned and played. He uses a Casey Burns Bflat as well.
He played a Blackwood Bb Flute made by Hawkes back on the “Heathery Breeze” CD. But, as we have seen, flute players have been known to move on different flutes, as the whim takes them.
