Top players....which flutes?

Rob that was fantastic

“I tip my hat to anyone who can keep track of what flutes Levine was playing and when he played 'em.” Liney Bear.

Well, last time I met David, at a session in Ennystimon in July this year, he was playing a very nice sounding cocuswood keyed Olwell. I think this is his favoured instrument. At the shop in Miltown Malbay during Willie Week David had a bunch of flutes for sale including a keyless Olwell, a keyless Murray, and a keyed Grinter (Bb I think)

Bríd O’Donohue plays an old keyed flute with head joint by Cillian O’Briain, Tara Diamond plays a keyed Olwell I believe and Cathrine McEvoy a Rudall. Ciaran Sommers has a keyed Wilkes in C. Pat Mahan plays an unidentified keyless stick that he really makes sing, Pipers that flute Mick O’Brian has an Eb Wilkes, Peter Laban plays a keyless D Murray, Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh plays a keyless D Murray

Well, actually Liam Kelly switched to a Wilkes flute.

I know that flute as well, Steampacket, and it’s a winner all right. And the keyless Eb Olwell was once mine, alas - gone now.

Back on topic - anyone know what flute Sylvain Barou recorded on the most recent Comas album? I got it on itunes, so no liner notes.

I think that the Sylvain used an Aebi flute in the Comas CD, but he plays now a Morvan, you can have a look at the Youtube thread, at the end, to watch Sylvain playing the Morvan flute, a Pratten model.
I the Guidewires CD (i recomend it) he plays the Morvan as well, I think, which is his favourite flute at the moment.

Sam Murray has featured on the list more than anyone, it seems, with Olwell, Grinter et al just behind in numbers.

Calum Stewart has lately been huffing into a Rudall & Rose.
Helluva a great sound coming out of it.

Boyd

Calum sold his Rudall awhile ago. He is playing an 8-key Rudall copy by Norman Holmes and Bill McNaughton, modeled after Tom McElvogue’s Rudall. The H-M is the flute Calum played as runner-up to BBC Scotland’s 2007 Young Musician of the Year, and what he plays on his recent CD. Tom recently picked up his own H-M flute.

As I understand it (and Norman can correct me if he sees this), their waiting list is now closed.

Kevin Krell

Desi Wilkinson and Ronan Browne play Martin Doyle Flutes
Tom Doorley plays an Olwell in Cocuswood.
Liam Kelly plays a Wilde Ruddall in D aswell as the afore-mentioned Eb Wilkes.

In addition to her Rudall and Rose, Catherine McEvoy now also has Grinters in Eb, D, and C, all of which can be heard on her most recent recording.

Not exactly, Liam´s flute by Wilkes is in D. The last Dervish CD is recorded in D instead Eb (all their previous recordings were in Eb). The moved 1/2 tone flatter recently.

That’s interesting. Does anyone know why they decided to change?

Perhaps they were worried that they might be mistaken for DeDannan and get caught up in all that brouhaha.

What DeDannan brouhaha?

Mommy, stop the car…

I want out!

Really? Is there a raging ITM scandal with which I am not aware? What could be so controversial about a band as bland and harmless as DeDannan? Well, I have heard their version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”–I have to admit, that’s pretty strange.

Boy, are you out of touch.

Most shocking, indeed! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I got my information from the liner notes of his new solo album Sweetwood where it says “Liam’s D Flute Wilde from Ruddal and Rose; Eb Flute Chris Wilkes.”

Liam Kelly playing a Wilde? That´s new for me. Thanks for the info.
Regards.
