Tønder Festival

On Friday Jeroen (pixyy) and I traveled over to Tønder for the annual Tønder festival. The idea to go in the first place was very much a spur of the moment decision made about a week earlier, which meant that most concert tickets were sold out long ago. However, one particular concert on Friday still had plenty of tickets available, so we decided to go to that one, stay the night in Tønder and head back to Copenhagen on Saturday.

Another good, specific reason to go was that Brigitte Goldie had been telling me that we should come over and visit Colin and her, who had a stand at the festival. The prospect of a cool concert, AND a meeting with the Goldies (not to mention getting to try out dozens of different Overton whistles) proved too much of a temptation, so we were off!

The concert on Friday featured Danish band ULC (old Danish folk with a bit of jazz and English song thrown in for good measure), Scottish band Blazin’ Fiddles (five fiddlers in one band, ugh!), and last - but certainly not least - Flook! I had had the pleasure of attending one of their concerts a few years ago, but for Jeroen it was the first time. We were naturally blown away by the performance, which never fails to amaze.

We also had a very nice time hanging out with the Goldies at their stand - they are both extremely nice people. And of course we got to play around with more whistles than you can shake a low D at. I fell for an easy-playing (purple anodized!) low D, which suited me better than any low D I have tried so far (Colin, please don’t forget the visible-signature certificate  ).

We took a couple of photos, which can be seen here:

'twas a fine trip indeed.
Tønder was wet - the tent picture was taken on one of the rare moments that it wasn’t raining. Quite bizarre really to see thousands of people camping out on some bumpy field out by a folk festival…

The Flook concert was absolutely amazing. The energy they play with can just not be contained on a CD. I just caught myself watching them with a huge grin on my face.

Meeting Colin and Brigitte was really nice and the picture of the Overton whistle display explains beyond words why we spent most of our time in the instrument maker tent!

2 months to the Copenhagen Irish festival - i think I’ll survive

I’ve heard that this is a great festival…some of the first time folks at Goderich this year were raving about Tonder, and how both festivals had a lot of the same common “good things.”
