I was going to place an order at Elderly and pick up a Generation Bb, a couple Generation Fs or Gs (one for me and one for the two-year-old ), a Clarke D, and a Susato A (that’s not too many at once right?). I want to get the Susato C, D, Bb set but they’re out of stock and I need the Bb (or an A) soon.
Yep, the low A is really nice. Here’s my tip: buy the medium bore tunable, and if you find that you like it lots, you can order a G and F body for that mouthpiece directly from the Susato website. Relatively cheap to expand your keys this way, and it has you waiting to see how you like the A before doling out any more cash. I love their A and G and get a lot of use out of them. The F is fine, but not as outstanding as the other two.
I like my Susato As (yes, I have two – don’t ask). You have to get used to the fingering, especially with a couple of the larger holes, because it doesn’t feel quite the same as other whistles (at least ones that I’ve played), but once you can get the holes covered when you want to, it’s a nice-sounding whistle.
You can also get a Bb medium-bore body (the one that goes with the D and C is a small-bore). That would of course be louder than the small-bore, but it sounds pretty nice too. I don’t use the Bb very often, just because I don’t play many tunes in that key, but I do like the A and G.
If you’re interested, I could probably sell you my extra A. Then, as was said before, if you like it you could get the other bodies from Susato (or whatever other source you use).
I just received my Susato A yesterday from Elderly so I can’t give you much of a review at this time. I’m still getting used to the finger spacing but I can reach the holes without using the piper grip. I’ve played a few slow airs and it sounds great. It seems to have more back pressure than my Susato high D and low D.
How would the Susato low A stack up with, say, a Shaw A? I know Dale likes his awfully well. I guess I leaned toward the Susato because it was tunable and I’m looking to play it w/ other musicians.
Just my .02. I’m neither a Susato hater nor detractor. I really never liked my very old Susato narrow bore A and the thought of a Shaw in that key leaves me breathless (literally). Anyway, why not consider a WW A, truly a wonderful whistle and perhaps the best A when considering bang for the buck. It’s funny, I sold both an Overton and Copeland (I love both generally)and kept the WW A.
