Oh yea, we do this in Klezmer music also. You’re at a certain note and you don’t know the next one, so you advance by the scale or mode being play until the right note is heard. If you go too far, you can go back down making a very nice ornament and everyone thinks that it’s part of the song. You can do it again the next time through just to make it convincing.

Skipping notes sometimes also works - in the right place.

Exactly! When I played with the slow player group in San Francisco, there was a guy there who, if he hit a wrong note, would stop and say, “Have you not heard that varation?”
