The Rocks of Bawn

delete

THere are two distinctly diferent versions of the tune, one [the unusual one] that Willie Clancy played [and Liam O FLynn with Paul Brady singing it if I remember correctly] and then there’s the one the Rock of Bawn is usually sung to. I can’t lead you to the ABC’s however, sorry.

I had posted an image of a version here but it doesn’t sem to work. You can find that version [Not the Clancy version, but nice in itself] on JC’s tunefinder.

Hi Sean

Did Mickey Dunne record it on his CD? (I am in work now so I cannot check)

Regards

Sean

The Willie Clancy version is on the CD “The Pipering of Willie Clancy Volume 1” - Cladagh CC32CD. The Liam O’Flynn version with Paul Brady is on the CD “The Given Note” - Tara CD3034.

Mudcat has the lyrics plus abc and midi versions: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=6479

JC’s ABC Tune finder has it here: http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/findtune?P=rocks+of+bawn&F2=find+(wide)&L=1000

The Boys of the Lough have also recorded the Rocks of Bawn on a CD called “The West of Ireland” in 1999

Track 8 Cathal McConnell Vocal, Aly Bain Fiddle, Mick O’Brien ‘D’ Uilleann pipes/whistle, Dave Richardson Accordion, Ron Shaw Cello, Malcolm Stitt Guitar.

Mick O’Brien also plays his Bb pipes made by Alain Froment on track 7 Slow Air.
My Bonnie Blue-Eyed Lassie and Cathal McConnell joins in on Bb Flute the last 2 reels The Boys of Twenty-Five/The Strokeston.

I learnt the air my ear from Willie Clancy and Liam O Flynn recording. The song book I have the note where in C and I changed it to G but it was a bit different. My Dad may have an old song book with the note in Do ray me. So I may have something later which I will type it I have same one that is played by Willie Clancy and Liam O Flynn.

All the best

Are the words to the air Willie played the same as the more usual version, or very different? And what record’s that Brady/O’FLynn piece on?

Kevin, I believe I answered this above. The Mudcat thread has lyrics close to the Brady/O’flynn version.
