The Lingerie Monk

This is a link to a video concerning Michael Attie,
a Zen teacher and friend of mine, who teaches
partly out of a lingerie store ‘Playmates’ he
owns in Hollywood.

Michael is, in fact, a terrifically good Buddhist
teacher. His other venue is the Don’t Worry
Zendo. There are several videos concerning
him.

sheds new light on you retreats

Zen lingerie!! It’s next-to-nothing.

What is the sound of one garter snapping?

Scoff if you must…

If you meet the Buddha on the Internet, delete him.

Last I saw him, Michael was learning to play the accordian.
He thinks the universe is a sort of cosmic joke. It’s
really neat cause he’s combined this zany attitude
with a really deep, practical
understanding of Buddhism/Hinduism.
There are pictures of Alfred E. Neuman in the
Don’t Worry Zendo.

Michael
spent a lot of time in India. It shows. Also he’s associated with
the splendid Hanuman temple in Taos New Mexico,
where a lot of India hippy types go.

Heh. What a joker. One might dismiss him as a charlatan, but so many years as a bonafide monk counts for something. It’s that sort of thing that makes you know that Zen is alive and kicking.

There’s an anarchic tradition of the unorthodox in Zen practice and teaching that shows up now and again. I did a Google search for Bobo Roshi to offer an example, but couldn’t find anything other than folks who’ve co-opted the name for themselves.

I love L.A.
-Randy Newman-

Me too. I love LA.

The bottom line is that Michael is meditating a good deal,
and he’s a kindly and decent man. The media are hyping
the lingerie side of things a lot, for obvious reasons,
but when I was practicing with
him a good deal, I hardly knew
it existed; never saw the place.

The interviews are valuable–The fellow actually goes kind
of deep.

Guys, would it be as easy to detach from assuming a potential of placing oneself in a situation of possible sexual expoitation if the youtube video had featured a male religious leader prancing about his underware store with scantily clad young men?

There would still be the same irony.

It is Michael making the best of his karmic situation. I think that I remember reading on one of Michael’s sites that he originally left that situation and become a monk. To my mind Michael’s decision to keep the shop that his father gave him and run it as a business shows Michael dealing with the past that he hadn’t managed to leave behind.

Although I think that both Nano and myself personally lean towards preferring scantily clad females.

The question wasn’t about Michael
but rather a possible perceived illusion you might have of Michael.

Its not how open minded he is
but rather how open minded you might be.

It was about the males here
and their ability to detach from assuming a potential of placing themself in a situation of possible sexual expoitation.

Had the youtube video had featured a male religious leader prancing about his underware store with scantily clad young men

would you guys be able to get beyond making assumptions that by placing yourself in that situation you wouldn’t be placing yourself at sexual risk.

hyldemoer, since Nano and myself were the only two teasing Jim…

I really don’t think either Nano or myself really care.

Jim picked that interview.

There were 3 or 4 other iterviews linked on his site, from other shows, (that I provided the link to) The other interviews did not feature scantily clad of either sex. Jim chose the scanily clad one.

Have a day

Watch it, sunshine. That’s a bit too close for comfort… :astonished:

Oh, for fecksake. You know nothing about me. If the above were the case I’d make pretty much the same comments I had already. You’ve caught me on a bad day, and so I’ll just say why don’t you go blindly carp at someone else.

Interesting, isn’t it, the gulf of difference a vowel can make in a meaning!

Buddhu: Buddha with a ewe?

Thank you Jim.
