The Blue Tac "Pea" Mute

Trying not to side-track Loke’s thread on commercial mutes,

I’ve played around with the blue tac “pea” (my fav, so far)

This has been much discussed, but I have had little very little luck with the blue tac “pea”… One more time, out of plain curiosity, from someone who has had success, how big of a “pea” do you use and exactly where do you place it?

Please, all forgive me for bringing up this old dead horse again (It’s kinda like paying taxes, you know)… Loke, your observations, if you don’t mind? No doubt size and placement are variable from whistle to whistle, and likely from person to person, but I would welcome some specific examples of arrangements that have worked. I swear, I’ll never bring it up again. And I also have some waterfront property for sale…

Maybe someone could post a picture?

What a splendid idea!

There was a picture posted a month or two ago. I can’t remeber the name of the thread.

I don’t remember it, but that would be nothing new either… For the life of me, I can’t find it. Anyone know in what message the picture was posted?

Just guessing, I would say the “pea” I use is about 5mm in diameter. You can roll it up and down the ramp to vary the volume. I haven’t found it to work so well at very low volume. Someone in the same room as me would still be annoyed by the volume (and my playing ability). …but the “pea” does help.

I don’t know if anyone else have found this to be true, but I find the reactions of the whistle changes when I mute it with the “pea.” A specific example is my low D on my susato VSB…it becomes nearly impossible to make audible if I have “pea” rolled down too far even though my other notes are audible.

Thanks Loke… That would be about a medium English pea size  Maybe someone can still provide a link to the photo. Still haven’t been able to find it.

Scroll down and there’s a picture. Also do a search for “sticky” and you’ll find a discussion of it. The picture refers to wax, but sticky tack works better.

Thanks Blackhawk… I see the problem now… I am confused. I have been talking about the ball of blue tac on the ramp used as a mute, not the ball of blue tac packed into the cavity under the windway to produce the much discussed tweak. But enough of this, and on to bigger and better things. Good night, all.
