the 50th anniversary

A few tunes for the 50th anniversary of the (first) Kennedy assassination:

Crucifixion by Phil Ochs. Phil sang this for Bobby once, and supposedly by the end they were both bawling. It’s one of my favorite songs ever; goes very well on the dulcimer, too.

Beethoven the funeral march from the Eroica Symphony. According to NPR this afternoon, the Boston Symphony had regular Friday afternoon concerts, and they found out about the assassination during the show. They changed the program, and after announcing it, they played this piece. It’s really a spectacular tearjerker. (Too bad most of what Beethoven wrote was (allegedly) in major keys. )

I was interested to note that a Memorial Service is being held at Runymede for the occasion.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings is probably the obvious one. Beautiful, too.

I have a great fondness for Faure’s Requiem. After all the pain, sadness and disillusionment in my youth at JFK’s assassination, I find its peace and tranquility quite consoling.

Bob

That’s my wife’s favorite piece ever. We may have to listen to it tonight.
