97% of the shots consumed are soju?!? If that’s true, how on God’s green earth did the ROKs get where they are today? Soju is nasty stuff. I drank my share while stationed in South Korea; it tastes like it was distilled from kerosene.
Of course the possibility does exist that the Koreans fed us GIs the lower end of the soju spectrum!
When was this? I’ve only had soju once, but since it was from a huge glass jar where it was marinating kumquats, I didn’t have the bare-bones experience. But I remember that I thought that all the same, it was like shochu - but not. Must be something particular came through those kumquats.
I spent 1978 at Osan AB in Song Tan Up, Korea. Soju may be more refined these days. Or, since selling rot-gut liquor to foreign troops dates back as far as armies themselves, we may not have been getting the good stuff.
