So, I recently received a D whistle and an E body from Mr. Syn himself and I must say I am quite pleased. At first hitting the high b took quite a bit of backpressure and air, but for some reason the whistle has gotten better and requires less, while still maintaining the integrity of the low end. I must say that I have played quite a few whistles, but these are amazing considering the price.
Mr. Syn said he could make me an E body for the D whistle head (which I was very excited about) and it turned out to be a nice, loud whistle that plays great. Lovely sweet tone, strong low end and very reactive. I recommend him highly.
Hi Michael, glad you like the E body mate, and thanks for the report!
Pushing the envelope at both ends of the scale has been an interesting exercise, I am now making bodies for the syn whistle standard head to range between E at the highest, and Bb at the lowest. As you have noticed, the back-pressure increases as the length of the body decreases. At the bottom end, the Bb is quite a mellow whistle, gentle to play, while at the other end, with the same head, the E is sharp and loud, and a whistle that you can ‘push’ into with resistance from the back-pressure.
I think that is probably as far as the range will go without changing bore diameter. In that direction incidently, I’m working on the keywork for a Low Low D (1.5" bore) and looking into tapered bore Low whistles based around a 1" dia.
Cheers, Syn.
Well jeez Ive been saying that for months. His Eb is just killer, and the D is up there with any high end whistle Ive gotten rid of lately. Now he is doing a Bb. God will it never end…
