Hello all. I just got a chanter, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for tunes to play. I have already figured out amazing grace and most of scotland the brave. Any suggestions in general as to playing it? I already have a fingering chart, and I’ve figured out some of the fingering by myself, but I was wondering if there are some in’s and out’s that I should know about, playing-wise.
For Great Highland pipers in your area, get ahold of Gail or Chad. You might check here on one of the first few. There’s a list of tunes, you know, including Rambling Pitchfork, Si Bheag, Si Mhor, and Tabhair dom do Lamh. Sure enjoyed reading it! Thanks!
Did I miss something? How did you know where whistlerroberto lives, Lorenzo? And I had no success with your link.
If this is a Highland bagpipe chanter, then yes, find other pipers with the goal of finding regular instruction. Highland bagpipe playing is very technical and standardized. So much so that there is almost an air of elitism amongst the arts more devoted and accomplished practitioners. On the other side of the coin are those that just like to strap on a kilt and make noise.
Along with simple tunes, most folks just learning are working on the technical stuff too like doublings, grips, throws etc.
While looking for instruction, check out this website. There are some basic video lessons with an accomplished piper and instructor.
I would highly recommend going to www.bobdunsire.com. It is a website similar to this one but for Bagpipes. I think you’ll find a MUCH larger response to piping questions there.
Ye i’d recommend bobs site that BESharp suggested above, and definitely find yourself a tutor! You will need one. Playing the pipes is extremely technical and there are things which just cannot be learnt from books and videos, you need someone who knows what they’re talking about to demonstrate things hands-on like properly executing embellishments, timing and phrasing, which are critical when playing the pipes properly.
