Stuck Sindt

Hello everyone,
Well, I have had my new set of Sindt whistles for about two months now, and I am having so much fun. What a treat to have these little gems sitting around. Now, I need some advice on a tuning slide problem. I have been having a great deal of difficulty removing the D and E# bodies from the head. They stick and the only way I can get them out is by twisting. Any ideas of what might be causing this? It isn’t a problem with the E body. Is there something I should be using to grease the joint? Thanks for your help.
Slainte,

You’d do better to address that question to John Sindt. He’s always been very helpful and quick to respond and would have the best answer as the whistlesmith.

I agree with straycat. John will be able to help you with the problem.

When you do get an answer, please post it here so we can all learn a little!

The Sindt I have has a brass on brass tuning slide, which is a bit stiff but in a good way.

The first thing to do is to clean off any old grease and dirt on both surfaces. Paper towels alone should be sufficient although soap and water or rubbing alcohol are probably okay. If there is any heavy oxidation or corrosion then you’ll probably need to use a bit of Brasso. You can relube the slide with a tiny amount of Vaseline or tuning slide grease. Do not using something like Almond oil any other oil that tends to dry out. If this doesn’t fix the problem then I would inspect the roundness of the tube, where it inserts into the head. If for some reason this is not perfectly round, then it’s best to have this properly repaired.
