Syn tuning slide

I just got my Syn D/C set in tonight, and I have to say the only thing that’s gotten me to put it down is the fact that it’s 11:30 at night and I’m in an apartment building. The C’s tone is absoloutely gorgeous.

My question is about the tuning slide. I’ve never owned a tunable whistle before, so I don’t know how delicate I have to be. The C has basically no resistance for the first 3/4" or so of the tuning slide, meanwhile the D is a real brute to even get the slide in at all. I’m not in a wrestling match, but exactly how delicate must one be in this sort of scenario? Is the D supposed to have that much resistance, or should I see about exchanging tubes?

Also, rather than curiosity killing the cat (or whistle), should I avoid removing the pin to examine the fipple’s construction?

If the D is tight, try cleaning it thoroughly and then applying a (very!) little cork grease, chapstick, or vaseline to help it along.

Earle has told me in the past the pin is there to let you take the thing apart and clean it…but I’ve personally never done it :wink:

Second Wanderer. Clean it to make sure there is no dirt or foreign particles in there, then add some grease and see how the fit is afterwards. If it’s still too tight, you might want to ask Erle about it.

The slide should be fairly snug. If the C is too loose (causing you to go out of tune during playing) then apply some bee’s wax to the surface.

The Eb out of my set is the same way. I used a brass/copper cleaner, and some cork grease, and it seems to have helped my problem a little.
