Start at low D ? ( help this beginner pls )

I saw tons of flute around the internet. most of people are suggest low D, anyone can giveme some sample for low d ?
moreover, anyone can suggest me which flute is better for begineer ?
is it have a things call irish flute and “whistle” ?
what’s different between both of them ?
I want to play a kind of style like movies “titanic” , what type of flute does the theme using anyway ?
I do not mind you give me more suggestion! Please and Thank you

( I am looking the site about PVC and “whistle” now…)

Hi, and welcome to the board.

“Titanic” used a whistle, and probably a flute. An Irish flute is blown “sideways”, and a whistle is end-blown, like a clarinet. Also, whistles are MUCH cheaper than flutes, and you can get a good whistle for about 10 USA$. I would suggest you get a “high” D whistle rather than a “Low” D because the smaller high D whistle is easier to learn on, and you can always switch to low whistles later.

http://www.thewhistleshop.com has a good selection of beginner’s packages that include whistle(s), tutor/song books, and recorded music for reasonable prices. They also have lots of tips and suggestions for beginners. I have no commercial interest in The Whistle Shop, it is just the only site I have found that has nice beginner’s packages.

Good luck, and good whistling if that’s how you decide to go.

maybe I got it, what is tinwhistle ? what’s different between normal low D whistle ?
Thanks.

That seems to be a nice choice for a first whistle  Good luck!

Pennywhistle, tinwhistle, and Irish whistle are really just different names for the same instrument.

A “High D” whistle’s lowest note (the one with all the finger holes covered) is the D above Middle C on a piano. It also plays the next higher octave, and sometimes two or three notes in the third octave. A “Low D” whistle plays one octave lower than a High D, is much longer and requires a good finger stretch - Low whistles are generally more difficult for beginners to learn on because the holes are harder to cover completely.

The musical scale on both whistles is: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#, d, e, f#, g, a, b, c# ^d

Did you take a look at the tutorial at the Whistle Shop site? There are several other on-line tutorials to help you learn. Unfortunately, right off the top of my head I don’t remember the URL’s.

Happy whistling!

lkthomas:

I second the suggestion on the whistleshop.
Thom, the owner is quite a nice guy and he’s got a wonderful selection to look at. In addition, the web page has alot of information on whistles which should be of great aid to you in learning how to play.
He also gives an explanation on why its better to learn on a soprano D and go to a low d later on. (Kendra is on the money in this matter too.) From personal experience, I don’t know how I could have gone with a low d without doing the soprano d first. Besides, a soprano D is cheaper & you need to find whether this great hobby suites you.

On the instrument matter, he has a deluxe beginning whistler’s set. It has a Sweettone soprano D, a Clare D (which was my favorite of the two)and a learn to pay the pennywhistle book which has an accompanying CD. It’s a good value.

If you find whistle playing to your liking, there are limitless choices in what to upgrade to and you’ll see many a post on personal whistle preferences. There are inexpensive, mid-priced & high-priced whistles.

Anyway, welcome to the board. I hope this helps. You really can’t go wrong with that deluxe whistle package.

Cheers!

Thank you. how about tin whistle ? is it good ?

I’m not sure I understand your question. If you ae referring to the two whistles that come with the deluxe beginners set, they are a cheap investment in seeing if you like to whistle. It’s good that Thom sends two as the Sweettone and Clare have their own unique sound and characeristics. As you learn to play you’ll develop your own preference on which one you will prefer.

lkthomas,
please don’t take offence( you english is better than my chinese), but maybe you could connect with one of the chinese speakers on the board to help translate for you.
Eldarion + a few others live in Singapore, and at least one person works in China. If you search on singapore or china, you should be able to find them.
Regards,
John

lkthomas,
I think you did not understand brownja. Brownja said, lkthomas please don’t be upset about this, but please get help with your english. Brownja did NOT say your english is offensive. If you read brownja’s message again, maybe you will see this.

–Chris A.

amar, first thing is, I do not need your help either, I even do not know who are you anyway. Same as what I say before F off…
ChrisA, man, I read it over and over again, I just saw he is a lamer that using a different attuide to Chinese people , that’s it.

Thank you ChrisA, if people treat me nice, I will also be nice to them, trust me

I don’t use a different attitude towards any kind of people, it makes no difference to me where people come from. I myself am half-indian living in Switzerland, I’d be the last person to treat people badly due to their race. But how dare you come in here and tell people they should f-off? Nobody here was, and will be offensive to you.

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that I’m on holiday in France. I stop in a small village to request assistance finding my destination. My attempts at French, while laudable, are somewhat less than effective. Someone overhearing the conversation says “Hey, Florian down the way speaks English, Why doesn’t someone ring him up and see if he can help this fellow out?”

Where’s the offence in that?
Would it not be inappropriate, not to mention, counterproductive, for me to respond with obscenity and verbal abuse?

After reading this thread, and the one on the flute forum, It seemed there a bit of confusion, I was going to add my 2 cents, then thought that maybe you could more comfortably and effectively get the information you desire from someone that speaks your native language.

There are people on this board from all over the world and it would have been no different if you were from Germany or Uraguay.

The ironic thing, we most often have requests for translation between English and American, not another language.

I’m truly sorry you found my post offensive. I do believe, however, that’s a more a result of your hypersensitivity, rather than anything patently offensive in my post.

Sincerely,
John Brown

Well said, brownja!

lkthomas,
I think the only reason brownja suggested getting some translation help is because it was obvious that you weren’t understanding the answers people gave you to your questions. They would answer them and then you would ask the same question again in a different way. No offense by anyone was intended. People here are generally very helpful and friendly and go out of their way to help strangers and friends in need.

I suggest in getting started with the whistle that you do what I did when I started on Chiff & Fipple–read all of the various parts of the website: whistle brands cheap and expensive, interviews, FAQs, etc. It will give you a lot of information. I know it helped me get a good start in the whistling world.

Best wishes and good luck to you,
Cees
