Word has it that it’s
2 1/16" by .600" by .550"
My experience thus far is that the staple could be a tad less on both #s. Plus, The reed length should be 3 1/4 long. With a staple as big as the 600 to 550 #s, you won’t be able to put it far into the head anyhow w.o. gapeous majorous on the sides!
Hi Padraig, i have a K&Q chanter steeple for that period and it is exactly the dimensions you have gave ![]()
Hope it goes well

Got 2 tied on now and playing well enough, but the jury is out until at least Saturday to see where they end up.

I have a source that states:
" 13.75 mm and 15.25 mm, rolled on conical mandril. Eye 1.7 -1.8 mm Internal. My notes say the rake on the flattened portion was 40 mm long"
Again, those numbers make good sense (even though they’re not far off from the .600 X .550), or perhaps better sense as it would have and effect on the 40mm long rake (could be slightly shorter with the smaller numbers?).
I can totally confirm the flattened portion to be 40mm long, as I just tied and untied a reed 5xs (pulling the staple out) trying to even the octs., until I decided to go for the more permanent take-the-wee-mallet-to-the-staple treatment be sure to use your mandrel when doing this and use light taps). The flattened portion is indeed 40mm and brought A2 back to earth.
So, the total length is nearly 86mm (3.36", or so I think I saw that).
That strikes me as long-ish and the staple big-ish, so perhaps an alt solution could be found, but It ain’t gonna be me who finds it!

I’ll stick with this. It woulda saved me mega time to know this before hand, so I’ll submitt this to Steve Prybl for the reed compendium, bendium!

Here’s a pic of the 2 reeds I made for Eamonn Dillon (sound file soon). The heads look short, but they’re at .956 or 24mm. They measure 3 15/16 or 87.15mm apprx, and 3 3/8 or 86mm.
*The longer one being the one with the cut corner. Cutting the lips at angles etc., is not something I normally tend to do. I think there was an issue with the corner (can’t remember) but the reed works, and is airtight. If it ain’t broke…
Well here’s a quick pass. At the 2nx thru B, I pressed the bag too hard (you can hear it in the drones) and I made the E jsut growl a tad, but you can hear that’s not and issue. Mind you I’ve been playing my B the entire day, so my fingers are having a difficult time finding their hold..hence some of the slop…but this is about the reed… it seems I’m forever sloppy!
This is a v. easy reed to play, so my pressures too are a bit skewed, which is why the E growled.
Thanks for sharing the details of the finished reeds, and the picture and sound file.
The chanter sounds very close with this new reed to the one you made last year, but the recordings then being made by Mr Dillon. I would guess the microphones then were a little further away from the set, a bit more echo. Great playing again, by your self.

I believe the recording I made of Eamonn was in his huge very echoy tiled living room. Mine, that was done in my small office/studio.
Thank you for the listen. I’m going to post a new thread dricting people to this thread so they can hear this. I delievered the chanter to Eamonn yesterday and he was thrilled! It plays great!! Easy, even pressure from bottom to top, with a back d that doesn’t break, etc. This is the kinda yoke that I’ve been aiming for during the years of making reeds.
Now…to make 'em all like that!!!
Practice, Practice, Practice!!!
