Went to see SpiderMan2. I read comics a lot when I was a kid, but unlike a lot of comics fans, I haven’t continued to read them in adulthood. I also haven’t been a big fan of the superhero movies. I saw the first 2 Superman movies and literally walked on the Superman III I was so bored. I think I saw only the first Batman movie. I saw X-Men and X2 on cable–didn’t really find either very interesting. Didn’t much like the original SpiderMan movie.
But, I wanted to report that I really liked Spiderman 2. Great performances by all. (The guy that plays the newspaper editor is hilarious, by the way). This movie may have the most accomplished special effects I can remember seeing (although I would continue to give the Greatest Accomplishment in Special Effects to 2001: A Space Odyssey, because they did so much with so little technology.)
Exciting and interesting story. A much, MUCH better bad guy than that embarrassing villain in Spiderman I (you know, the sort of dwarf PowerRanger with the flying thing on his feet. He shows up briefly in this one, to set up SpiderMan 3. But don’t worry–he’s still dead.)
Go, if you haven’t already, and post your review here.
…Spidey has always been hands-down my favorite comic-book character. One of the reasons I’ve always liked him is because when the costume’s off, he’s just a normal guy like you and I. Both of the Spiderman movies have done a wonderful job of depicting this aspect of Peter Parker/Spiderman. When it comes to superhero movies, the human character/spirit is sometimes lost in all of the action mumbo-jumbo. Not so with Spiderman. And, Doctor Octopus has always been my favorite Spidey nemisis.
Oh yeah, I used to read a lot of Spider-Ham back in the day!!!
Has anybody here ever heard Weird Al’s “Spiderman”? It’s a parody of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” using the plot of the first “Spiderman” movie, and it’s absolutely hilarious!
I’m always consistently disappointed with this new crop of films based in 1960s comicbooks and TV series: Batman, Lost in Space, X-Men, Dick Tracy and so on. They just don’t “get” it, and keep churning out these “gothic” dark films. I think the first Superman was not so bad. I loved the flying scenes, and when Louis looks at him and says “Superman!”… I never liked Superman anyway, but that’s not the movie’s fault.
But dammit! you never kill a villain! why do they always have to kill the bad guys off in these movies?
I think the first Men in Black got it, but they lost it again in the sequel. I think even the Lord of the Rings movies miss the point of their story rather spectacularly. The Harry Potter movies, so far, are doing ok.
Good to hear that the second Spiderman doesn’t screw up.
I liked it a lot. Very well done. Though now I’m not quite sure what I can say about it without giving everything away! Go see it, a dhubh linn, so we can talk about it!
